Is 3D TV a fad?

However, it's a fad in it's current form. When the world rids itself of 3D glasses it'll become mainstream.

EDIT: as mentioned in the article it is particularly cost prohibitive to not use glasses, but the technology is available and in it's infancy.

3D TV in its current form, no thanks. Not even the cinema experience is really THAT fun.
Like phaktza said, as long as we have to wear glasses it'll be left on the fringes for people who have the cash to waste on these "innovations" every now and again.

Personally, I'm much more excited about the prospect of buying a TV that's true LED. The AMOLED on my phone does make normal LCD or backlit LED look quite ancient.

You can't lie down with glasses on, the earpieces press into the side of your head :erm:

I think they're going in completely the wrong direction, trying to sell 3D using LCD technology. They should rather be looking into using hologram technology, think outside the box for once. There's already laser-signage tech, holograms have been around for 5 or 6 decades, it should be easy to combine the two technologies, cheaper too.

Yet they cling to the LCD approach. On the other hand if someone does develop holographic TV all their multi-billion dollar manufacturing facilities will be obsolete! No wonder they're clinging to LCDs. Dinosaurs, that's all they are, dinosaurs :wtf:

Sneaking through the forest I peek around a tree and I spot the tell-tale plumes of condensation emitting from his nose.
His camouflage is amazing, he is one with the bark of the tree.

I lean slowly around the other side of the tree, holding my breath, extending my blade slowly, careful not to reflect any light from the blade in his direction.

I carefully walk around the tree, always on the alert for trip-wires.
There his body lies.

But ... his face ... no ... it cannot be ... he was brother!


When it gets real enough to be like the holodeck, then I'm in.
 
Some stuff (like pr0n) will be awesome in 3d, but I don't want Riaan Cruywagen appearing to be actually IN my lounge when he'e reading the news.
Imagine a Malema speach in 3d......shudder.....
 
It is definitely a fad until they eliminate the glasses. Watching a long movie like Avatar in the cinema gets painful on the eyes after a while, on television all the time would be less fun. Also consider how (un)successful and still expensive blu-ray is and you'll see why this will not catch on in its current form.
 
Fad or not, Google TV stands a better chance of making it into my house than 3D.

I'm not into this wishy washy new technology.

As a matter of fact, I do not see why I should buy an HD TV. Who wants to see other people's zits anyway? Sorry guys with HD.

I would understand if you buy plasmas or LEDs because they have bigger screens, are less bulky and are a lot more stylish than my tube TVs. That I understand.

HD, 3D both Fads.
 
I can feel the eyestrain while watching 3D - so I give it miss, not to mention that the vast majority of content is poorly made.
 
Can't help feeling that 3D TV is simply a stepping stone to the next big thing in the world of TV, soon to be forgotten. No chance of me ever getting one, TV plays too small a part in my life and definitely not worth paying that kind of money for it. Let me not even get started on the glasses.
 
3D TV, not thanks. A hologram in my living room would be pretty shweet though.
