Apple fanboy? ;) If Steve Jobs can be arrogant and cocky about his projects and how "crap" the other products are, why can't other people diss his products, have to even out the scales of justice :)
 
iPad is really nice but to be honest to me it just seems like a big iphone. Wouldnt spend all that money on it
 
Apple products are stupid. I mean the iPhone might well have the best UI around, but it doesn't make it the best phone around... not by a country mile. Larger tablets by Dell, HTC and (particularly) Samsung will wtfpwn iPads in terms of performance and usability. This is not even taking into account a Sony revival - their new Xperia Mini's are great phones for a cheap price.

SA is lagging behind, as usual. Once tablets become popular in first world countries, we will start seeing them being advertised here (most likely overpriced and attached to some mobile data contract)
I think the biggest losers in all this will be laptops, netbooks, and Microsoft - since they don't support ARM in their desktop OS.

Apple are far from stupid. I'm not a huge fan, but they are terrific at making people want their products! Steve Jobs is a very shrewd man... I mean - they managed to create a huge market for tablets where none existed before. I still find tablets to be kinda pointless though - very limited and can't do much more than a good smartphone can! And for those things it does better than a smartphone, there are alternatives that I think are better than a tablet. For reading I'd prefer a kindle or something - and for watching tv surely having a laptop/netbook is better? Don't have to hold the damn thing upright for one thing... Something like the Macbook Air seems like a much better buy than a tablet to me (as long as we're talking Apple products)
 
What's the point of something the size of a small laptop that runs a mobile OS? It's a smartphone with a big screen.

Something that size should run a proper OS like Windows or Ubuntu. Then it could be a true laptop replacement. At the very least laptop makers could scrap the trackpad in favor of a touchscreen.

At least then you'd end up with something more than a giant smartphone.

Tablets are nice to have, but hard to justify, ....mostly. Enter the Dell Streak. Its my oversized primary phone, but still pocketable and 5inch tablet rolled into one practical device. Apple eat yr heart out! Dell have shown them how it shld be done.! ...and I'm no Dell fanboy either.

Proper Windows ?

Any way use an iPad for a while. It is not a techie tool, if you want that get the new Air, it is an executive tool which works. Most people still carry a book with them as the laptop is unsociable and big. tablets bridge the paper divide, you should get some carbon credits using them.

Except for the prodigious amounts of electricity used when extracting Aluminium ;) I think that might cancel out your carbon credits from using less paper!
 
Also this kind of technology tends to have a short shelf life then end up as garbage. Anybody still here have the IPhone 1, how about the first ipod? Frankly while the tablet may be a revolution, until they are fixable and have easily replaceable batteries the cannot be green.
 
I still have the iPhone 1. Works great. Everything costs energy to make. A car generally a lot more than a smartphone. Tablets can be justified, however I agree not in all cases. My grandpa loves his iPad, it's great for his usage, which is primarily reading, a bit of music, email and web surfing.
