Just got my 6870 (Thanks Landmark) and all plugged into my new machine - only problem I have is that it only works with one VGA connector (I have 2 17inch VGA monitors). tried swapping them around and it seems that it only supports one VGA connector the other has to be DVI or HDMI or displayport - what a bummer

check here for more info - http://www.overclock.net/ati/853952-6870-not-detecting-second-monitor.html

well I guess I'll have to fork out for those 2 24inch Samsung LED backlit monitors I've been lusting after :D

Unfortunately you will only be able to connect 1x Analog (VGA) screen with the Club3D HD 6870 cards, because it has 1x DVI-I (Analog + Digital) and 1x DVI-D (Digital only) connectors. See DVI wikipedia page and
Club3D HD 6870 specs: CGAX-68724F / CGAX-68724

So ja, you need at least 1 screen with digital input if you want to run a dual screen setup.

Update:
You might be able to get an active display port converter to VGA, but it could be quite expensive.

Ok - i just got my 2 Samsung BX2450 to connect to my Club 3D 6870.
I cant seem to run both monitors at full resolution 1920 x 1080 without them having a black border around them.
They are both connected using the supplied DVI-HDMI cables.

should I try to get a HDMI cable?
using catalyst I cant even choose that resolution

It shouldn't be this difficult to get a dual monitor setup working

am I doing something wrong?

Go into CCC. Then look for a page that shows your monitors. Next, right click on the monitor on one of the monitors (there should be two at the bottom) and click configure. Then find a tab that has a oversan/underscan setting. Fiddle with that and hey presto, you're good to go

Can you run those screens individually at 1920x1080?

I doubt that using an HDMI cable would make any difference.
I find it very odd that you're having trouble with the HD 6870, because I'm running 2x Samsung 2333 @ 1920x1080 - rotated 90'C & 270'C in Ubuntu on my HD 5670 and I'm 1x HDMI->DVI cable and 1x DVI cable.

Thanks Archer - that did it

Damn - these monitors are going to give me neck-ache :)

I have like seven of those things lying around from previous cards... my last ATI card came with two even .

Quick question, sorry if it is a bit of a hi-jack but on the new GTX's which have 2 x DVI and a mini-HDMI is it possible to run 3 screens? Provided 1 screen has an HDMI port and mini HDMI-->HDMI cables exist.

No. Nvidia requires that you have 2 graphics cards before 3 screens are possible

What would the mini HDMI be used for then? does it just duplicate one of the DVI ports?

I dunno, ask nvidia. I honestly have no clue why they couldn't add 3 monitor support off one GPU
The next gfx generation will have 3 monitor support, then 10, then 20....
They know they are supposed to do that but can't do it now.

It is because you would need to add a lot extra to get more DVI/HDMI outputs (extra clock signal per output, DAC for DVI analog output, etc...), which you don't need for Displayport (since the clock signal is embedded in the stream, and it is digital only). Eyefinity, for example, is only feasible because of these features of Displayport. As to why Nvidia did not add Displayport technology, who knows? Possibly because they felt it would aid sales by requiring SLI setups, or because they felt it was a niche, or maybe because they had more pressing needs, like increasing performance-per-watt and reducing power usage and heat.

You guys are making me jealous :( I have just ordered my 6870, but only have one bx2450 :(

Hahaha. And here I thought you had a problem with the card... Glad to see you don't...

The card performs brilliantly - and the dual BX2450's are just the icing on the cake
