If you enjoy going to the gym, you will love that you can just clip on this iPod and start your workout routine without having to worry about a bulky iPod getting in the way.

Something we have to give credit to Apple for is that it is able to release new product versions and make the new hardware completely unique to its predecessors. The result is a variety of hardware designs within a single product line. The latest Apple product to follow this trend is the new iPod shuffle. Unlike the ugly ‘Pod’ that was last year’s shuffle, the new design is simply awesome, and it is the smallest iPod Apple has produced to date - it is about the size of a small USB flash disk. This tiny iPod also sports a built-in clip to allow it to be easily clipped onto your shirt or bag.

One of the first things you notice when you hold the new shuffle in your hands for the first time is that there are no buttons on the device. Apart from the clip and 3.5mm audio jack, the only other thing of interest on this device is the on/off/shuffle button. Playback is controlled via the in-line controls on the earphones. This feature has not been well received, but if you keep in mind what market this iPod is aimed at, you can see why this feature was implemented.

The playback controls are intuitive, and without touching the manual, it is kind of easy to figure out. The top and bottom end of the controls are pressed to control the volume. Pressing the grey centre part once will start or pause a song, and if you press it twice in succession, you will skip a track. If you hold the grey bit in for a few second while a song is playing, a ‘computer’ will read out the song name. Yip, that is the new VoiceOver feature that has been introduced with this iPod. In order to make this feature work, you will have to use iTunes, but on a device such as this where there is no LCD, VoiceOver is a really handy feature.

The sound quality produced by this little music player is superb and the earphones are excellent. Even though the biggest drawback to this device is that you can no longer use just any set of headphones, there will be a select range of third-party earphones with in-line playback controls available in the coming months. Having said that, if you are going to purchase the iPod shuffle, chances are you will be happy with the bundled earphones.

The iPod shuffle is designed for people with an active lifestyle who want a music player that won’t weigh them down. If you enjoy going to the gym, you will love that you can just clip on this iPod and start your workout routine without having to worry about a bulky iPod getting in the way.
