I’ve become spoilt with my MacBook: most things plug into the USB or Firewire and just works. Not so with MTN’s mobile 3G modem…
Normally I just plug a new device into my Mac and it works, installing the drivers seamlessly and – mostly – even having the correct picture of the device. MTN’s Hauwei E220 modem just did not work: my Mac complained of the ‘connected drive not being valid’.
Sitting at Clearwater mall I was fortunate enough to have a choice of several hotspots to choose from: Seattle, Spur, Ciao Baby and several more. After reluctantly entering my credit card info, I bought 60 minutes from Seattle for R25.
One Firefox window was used for search MyADSL’s forums, and the other for searching MTN’s site. Within seconds I came across the correct MTN support page, and downloaded the driver and manual for Apple.
It seems the XP driver is about 15MB, but the Apple driver is only 160KB! A quick download and install later and I’m up and running. The user guide was bigger than the driver – 700KB – but short and to the point.
