Apple’s alleged Kindle-killer seems set to be launched as early as April 2010.
In what may or may not be related news, two top-drawer US publishers are holding back ebooks of dozens of their upcoming major titles until the same time frame. This ties in well with the rumours of the manufacturing cogs for the iPad creaking into action, for the expected release of the iPad in the second quarter of 2010.

Unlike the Kindle’s grey-scale EPD display, the iPad will have a full-colour 10.1 inch LTPS LCD display; Apple are expected to offer a 30/70 revenue split unlike Amazon’s 50/50; and most attractively – to the industry that is – Apple will allow in-ebook, in-enews, or in-emag ads. This alone may be why Simon & Schuster and the Hachette Book Group chose to delay the ebook editions of 35 of their most promising upcoming titles until four months after the hardcover editions hit bookstore shelves. The speculation of course is that those two publishers might be in talks with Apple and have decided to delay their next wave of ebook launches until they can put those books onto a full-color platform that gives them a good revenue split and allows them to advertise their other wares – complete with online ordering, of course.
