My Telkom line has been totally dead since about 15h00 on Wednesday 1 Dec 2010. Residence is close to Centurion Theater in Amkor Avenue in Lyttelton, Centurion. Telephone number starts with 012 664 xxxx which I believe is linked to the Lyttelton Exchange located in Cradock Avenue.

There is no sound on the phone, no AC or DC voltage on the line when ALL phones are unplugged and line is measured with digital multimeter.

A fault has been logged last Wednesday and is still open, but no action yet by Telkom.

Any other problems in this area?

Thanks.

Yes. I'm in Trichardt Rd, also with a 012 664 number. My line started giving problems about a week ago, loosing sync every few minutes. My router shows CRC and HEC errors in the thousands, and general browsing etc. is extremely slow. Most of the time my connections just time out. It's a 384K line that used to be a 4MB line and the SNR now is much worse at the slower speed than it used to be at the higher speed, so something has definitely changed somewhere...

I also noticed I had no dialtone so I logged a fault with Telkom and the tech that pitched the next day said one of the two twisted-pair wires running from the telephone pole outside didn't have a connection. An hour or so later he claims to have fixed the problem, which it was to an extent cause I had my dialtone back, but I'm afraid the ADSL issues remain.

They've since tried to recreate the port at the exchange, which has helped exactly bugger all, so I called them again yesterday and am now awaiting the arrival of tech #2.

If it's any consolation, my DSL line has been dead for 3 and a half weeks and I phone Telkom every day and am promised that someone will look at it today. Alas... 3 and a half weeks later, I assume the person got lost because I have never seen them!

It is now more than a week with a totally dead phone line: No dialtone or ADSL !

Also still waiting for Telkom to correct the problem at the exchange or send a techie to fix the problem around here.

All this low level surfing (very frustrating) on my 3G account is starting to add up.

Maybe I must phone the CEO of Telkom.......

It started raining a little bit for a little while and now my line (or the ADSL portion of it, anyway) is completely kaput. It won't sync at all!

Strangely, it's crystal clear when I listen on the telephone, though there is this faint (but very regular) kind of ticking noise in the background...

No sign of Telkom yet.

EDIT: ...although I've seen lots of them driving around here lately. It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!

End of November my lines were down for 9 days before they acted. On the bright side? Some fat cats are looking at more big fat bonus pay-cheques for continuing to look the other way while 39% state-owned Telkom continues to be protected with fixed-line monopoly status while offering more and more appalling service levels.

I'm in the clubview area and my line is doing exactly the same, 4 meg adsl keeps op dropping connection every few minutes.

Does anyone know what the deal is with Telkom's Wimax these days? Do they have equipment available? Are they taking any orders? Do they even know that they're advertising it as a service?

There is a form on their website that you can fill out and everything, and I do have "average" coverage (whatever that means) according to their map thingy (which took about 40 minutes to open on my super-fast Vodacom edge connection...), so yippee!

While it makes me sad to consider having to deal with Telkom again, it seems to be the best alternative to my *****ty ADSL line at the moment, which I reeeeaally wouldn't mind replacing with something better right about now. Apparently the latency on wimax is comparable to ADSL so online gaming is still a possibility, even though it's wireless. Plus you can use any ADSL account of your choice - even MWeb uncapped, apparently.

And at R240 p/m for 512K wimax, it's cheaper than what I currently pay for my 384k excuse-for-an-ADSL line..

RE: Telkom Line Dead in Lyttelton - Repaired and Working !

Just some feedback to all my fellow "Telkom Customers".

My telephone line was EVENTUALLY repaired yesterday about noon: When I lifted the handset at about 12h30, I heard the dial tone.

Here is the story of what happened to me:

1. Subscribed to the 512kbps ADSL package in July 10 to test it, both the Telkom Faster ADSL line and the MWeb 512kbps Uncapped package.

2. Degraded my service again to the 384kbps package on 25 Nov 10, including the Telkom Fast ADSL line and the MWeb 384kbps Uncapped package. MWeb changed immediately, but Telkom said only at the end of the month.

3. At about 15h00 on Wednesday 1 Dec 10, the phone line went completely dead. (When they downgraded the line ???)

4. At about 18h00 on Wednesday 1 Dec, we logged a fault via the 10210 Call Center (and a mobile phone) and got a Fault Reference Number and an SMS to acknowledge the Fault Logged.

5. Around Tuesday 7 Dec we started phoning regularly. Call Center agents promised all kinds of stuff: 'Notifying a supervisor', escalating the fault, etc. etc.

6. My last, fairly excited call, was made last Thursday morning, telling them what I think about their service.

7. On Friday 10 Dec just before 11h00, I received a call from an external Customer Service Survey agent. In summary, I said the agents were fairly OK when I phoned, but taking more than 3 working days ( I was very forgiving ) was totally unacceptable to me, since the telephone and ADSL services are critical when you work from home.

8. On Friday 10 Dec just after 12h30, I heard the dial tone again and the ADSL was also working.

9. Just after 13h00, a Telkom Technician (Johannes) stopped at the front gate to ask if the phone and ADSL are working. He confirmed the problem was at the Exchange. (He should have used the phone ...)

10. Johannes phoned again (to my mobile) at 13h30 to verify that all is fine with my Telkom line.

11. Then, about 14h00, I received an SMS from Telkom that the Fault is in hand and has been allocated to a Technician to fix as soon as possible.

12. About 15h15, I received an SMS from Telkom that the Fault has been fixed.

End of Story.

Maybe we should log the faults with the Customer Service Survey company......
