In a recent Vodacom advertisement customers were proudly offered a free Samsung i600 mobile phone, which incidentally included ‘low call rates per second’. There is just one catch, Vodacom did not have this phone.

In a complaint lodged by a consumer to the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa, Vodacom is accused of advertising this particular cellphone when it has never been available to the South African market. The supplier, Samsung, confirmed this.

The advertising agency Afrikings, on behalf of Vodacom, submitted, inter alia, that the dates for which the specials were advertised was a bona fide error and has been corrected in the new brochures.
Apparently Samsung experienced problems with the delivery of the handsets and Vodacom was only made aware of this after the brochures were printed and distributed.

Better luck with the phones next time and I hope they at least gave the complainant a new Samsung i600 for his trouble.
