Most of my readers, I believe it is safe to say, have downloaded one thing or another from the web that they technically shouldn’t have. By technically I mean, legally they would be frowned upon should they be caught. We all have copied an mp3 or something even if it was just a shared tune blue-toothed via mobile phone from a friend or girlfriend. It happens and is practically unavoidable unless you are terribly conscious about the law and morality to a degree where it starts to disturb the people around you. There are ethics around these things you see. It is okay not to do it, but also don’t take it upon yourself to point out the wrongs of partaking to others because believe me, they are well aware of what they are doing and 9/10 times have very well reasoned if not always logical reasons why they do it. And by they, I mean we… I have copied stuff before. I admit it.
Unauthorised copying is however a very effective way to learn a skill. Think about it. You can learn invaluable skills if you are interested in anything remotely connected to computers. 3D designs skills by copying a cracked 3D Studio Max package! You can learn how to administer a Windows Server environment by downloading a cracked copy of Windows Server. No it is not so legal, but the end result is beneficial to both you and the copyright holder because you in the end will support their product for somebody else.
There are very expensive scientific software available for download on piracy sites like the Piratebay.org with which you can do some serious virtual lab experiments and molecular design experiments. These things can ultimately contribute to scientific discovery even if it is a little underground. Who doesn’t have an appreciation for a little underground science? If you log onto the Piratebay.org right now you will be able to learn the following for free :
Get a head start with Windows 7 coming out the end of this month only.
Learn Adobe PhotoShop if you want to go into digital design
Learn the Microsoft Office 2007 suite inside out. You will make yourself much more employable if you could show off efficiency in this suite.
Forget learning just Adobe PhotoShop, why not download the entire Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection and learn anything and everything regarding digital design including web design and flash.
Learn Apple’s OSX Snow Leopard by downloading it.
Get a head start with Office 2010 before its release early next year…
Make movies for free using Final Cut Studio! I wonder how many movie makers actually start out by pirating professional editing tools until they start making good money?
Learn to program in coding languages that actually are in demand today. You can find anything you need including books, right there online, for free…
Learn to play the guitar with a digital helper using Guitar Pro…
Do computer aided design work with Auto CAD. While you are at it, design the world a free or very cheap solar panel please!
Make music with Fruity Loops. Darude’s Sandstorm was written on a plane using similar software… songs by Daniel Beddingfield and many others were also made possible outside a studio with similar software…
Solve the worlds math problems by using MATLAB from Mathworks…
The list goes on and on as far down as you are willing to delve into the software list. And this is just software. I haven’t even looked at the very detailed and otherwise expensive (when bought) books available for free online… The reality is that piracy can be helluva good to the world if used right. The argument by many students that they only pirate until they use stuff in the corporate world is a valid one to me. Get the skill and then pay the piper.
