Internet Timing-Out randomly.. Afrihost

Afrihost has been very slow the last two months, especially international traffic. Getting 9-20KB/s on international downloads on a 4 Meg line

The end is near indeed .. now my line is dead i.e. have no ringtone since Saturday. Waiting for Telkom to come fix their k@k, then back to the issue of unstable bandwidth.

Anyone with advice on how to log packet loss (I'm already logging SNR & throughput) so I can prove to AH & Telkom one of them is in denial?

If the router can't do it then your pretty much out of (good) options. Next best alternative is a large amount of pings to the 1st hop.

Looking much better

Anyone notice any improvement? I am now getting 0% packet loss to the 1st hop, a marked difference from 4-11% this weekend

Code:
--- 41.132.28.1 ping statistics ---
7506 packets transmitted, 7501 received, 0% packet loss, time 7505457ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 22.896/25.418/294.469/8.371 ms

Could it be a capacity issue somewhere?

I am having the same problem. I called telkom and reported a line fault after trying multiple routers, isp's and line filters all with similar results. Telkom technician came out and did a full profile rebuild and changed my port. He said there is nothing wrong with my line :(

Here are my line stats and an HLSW latency graph so you can see what i mean.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 6.0 db 3.0 db
Noise Margin 20.4 db 13.0 db

Well those are some pretty outstanding values, so it doesn't appear to be your line.

You say you have tried multiple ISP's, which ones?
Which router are you making use of?
Do you notice these latency spikes during certain hours of the day, days of the week, etc.?
Could you run a ping to your 1st ISP hop (for an hour or so) and reply with those stats?

You say you have tried multiple ISP's, which ones? Afrihost using IS, Axxess using IS and Saix and finally the telkom guest account with a tracert to www.telkom. co.za
Which router are you making use of?Dlink 604T and a Netgear 2200
Do you notice these latency spikes during certain hours of the day, days of the week, etc.?throughout the day and night with little variation
Could you run a ping to your 1st ISP hop (for an hour or so) and reply with those stats?I could probably try doing this a bit later, but for now see my additional links

Damn, problem started again lastnight around 8pm and is still happening. 11-15% packet loss to 1st hop.

Seems I am going to need to start graphing this issue to see if there is a specific time it starts happening.

any info on your times, during set hours round about ?

Mine has been weekends with mweb uncapped or axxess prepaid or telkom guest. The horrible thing is that unlike if it was during the week you cant show telkom a thing since it starts working when they're working.

I am consistently getting poor ping rates on BTWeb (same data source as Afrihost). Did some tests:

Pinging Telkom.co.za!!! You can't imagine the lag online. It happens mostly during the day.

We were getting constant disconnects for about 2 weeks, but I logged a fault. Since then the disconnects happen rarely, but my latency is horrendous.

Telscum is finally breaking down!

It just started happening to me earlier on Afrihost. I was playing on PSN and I lost connection. Then I log into Gtalk and it drops me randomly. Then try to play BF:BC2 and also got dropped!

I just checked. My latencies APPEAR fine but in reality it's a different story. I fire a rocket in BC2 and it takes 1-2 seconds for it to actually fire (on WAGE/IBurst). Epic fail :/
