Does Telkom reckon itself among those organizations that can count on taxpayer funded bailouts should things go wrong no matter what? Its lack of responsiveness to consumer expectations sure makes it seem like it is. Telkom made billions in profit yet again but the margin is down drastically. Over 29% down to be exact. In spite of this the company is pricing itself in contrast to consumer expectations and losing out on extremely lucrative fixed line business with declining fixed line subscriptions at the order of the day. These things are not recession born because it has been happening since before the recession started.

The requested increase this time around may be slight, but it is an increase too far for Telkom. Pleasing shareholders can be done in ways different to increasing prices all the time. One thing outweighs investor satisfaction for a company and that is retaining customer loyalty. Without a healthy base of customers you cannot retain any investors over the long term. Telkom needs to do something amazing for its customers.
It is looking better in the options department, but pricing isn’t stellar and consumers know it! Telkom’s Internet offerings are also not progressing fast enough with as things stand now seemingly only retired folks and top management getting 8mbps test lines for a service that apparently cannot be rolled out for some reason I hear. We should be on 8mbps lines already across the board at the price of current 512kbps
connections.

The concession of 5GB caps instead of the normal 3GB ones is welcome but too little too late and only for selected customers. It should have been 10GB international and 100GB local by now at least! Telkom’s response to complaints in my opinion is sharper, at least where I live they respond very quickly to technical issues, like they did yesterday when they came to fix a busted cable connection to the pole in the back yard.

Telkom’s lack of sensitivity to customer expectations is already eating away at it like acid due to consumer resentment. The good things it is doing are going by unnoticed because they are not giving us what we need. We want to be amazed Telkom! Amaze us! Remember that consumers don’t have to apply to strike. We simply cancel our fixed lines!
