I decided to do the firmware upgrade after only getting this modem yesterday. So I downloaded the incorrect FW and when I tried to update it told me it is incompatible. But since then the router has not been working. The power light and internet light remains on (green) even with no telephone line plugged in.

When I go to the Network settings I see that the modem doesn't have an IP address anymore.

The reset switch at the back doesn't respond to anything.

Any ideas how to get it back to factory settings in order for me to access it again?

If you've flashed it with incorrect firmware, there are only 2 options that you can do:
1) Use tftp to upload the correct firmware - but I'm not sure how to do this with the D-Link routers
2) Return/RMA the D-Link router

It didn't actually flash the firmware. It just stopped the process and said it is incompatible (basically immediately after I clicked update)

I flashed mine with no probs the day I got it, lol... kinda serves you right for not making sure about the firmware version... anyway tftp should be possible?

I don't know anything about tftp, tried to google it, but don't really understand it.

And everything wasn't fine with the router as it stopped working frequently in the little time I had it and had to reset it the whole time for some internet

Sounds bad PearlJam, I got the same modem in September and all's fine without any update. Think you should return as suggested by Pada, sorry mate.

PearlJam I wasted about 7 hours (I'd guess) trying to recover this router when I did the same thing.
Dlink have retardedly given multiple routers the exact same model number, and provided no hardware version checking in their firmware files/software, so don't feel bad. Simply take it back to where you bought it and tell them its dead or "I can't get it working". (and say no more)
If they ask you what you did, say 'nothing'. It will go back to DLink eventually and they must fix it.

If the box says UPC code BRU/CS or whatever F/W version 2.01 then here is the correct firmware for DSL-2640U (UPC Code BRU etc)
There is absolutely no way you can recover it (I've tried every conceivable method and gotten suggestions and utils directly from DLink support), and its not your fault. Just take it back and don't waste your time any further.
I got a replacement for mine and updated with the firmware linked above and its running great.

DLink will soon realize their f*kup and will hopefully sort it out for future models.
More bricks. 2 3.
Surprise surprise, thats just page 1 of search results.

However, with a new one, running the correct, latest firmware 2.05, its been stable so far. Its only my 2nd DLink router, and I think they're pretty good, aside from the issues mentioned in this post.

I love the D-Link routers, but they should REALLY fix the firmware incompatibility issues!

yeah, I had a Dlink DSL 2540U.

Same thing happened to me. You can try to Hard reset it, you will find die procedure on the internet. I think you need to press the reset button for 10 seconds, then unplug the power and press reset for another 10 seconds, then plug the power back in and press the button for another 10 seconds.

If that doesn't work (like in my case) you can dump it and get a new one, its bricked.

If it cant execute the firmware it wont start up the TFTP server.

I took it back for a swop with a used unit. This one works....now just leave the firmware alone!!!

BTW, I did try the long sequence hard reset, but no luck
