DoC responds to digital TV broadcast standard rumours

Waffle waffle waffle. Everybody was onboard DVB-T despite government drifting in a ocean without a rudder.

The Left Hand doesn't know what the Right Hand is doing.

Somebody who probably was getting a fat cash bonus for lobbying on behalf of the Japs and the Brazos is kicking up a fuss in government cos he doesn't want to have to pay back all his lolly money.

The Minister of Communications will soon announce the decision made by cabinet with regard to this issue.
Who exactly is being paid per minute to make this decision take so damn long?
Fire the bloody lot of them.

It is time to make it known its what we want...what we pay for!

Rikhotso confirmed that the decision has been taken and that the minister will be announcing the decision within the next week.

Why announce that they will make an announcement if they already know the decision? They could have just announced what that decision is..

2 Reasons

1) It is the ANC's 99th birthday this weekend and everyone is in Party Mode in Polokwane (City formerly known as Pietersburg)
2) They want to have a nice Media Briefing to get their picture taken and all the media are at event no 1.

So we wait till next week :/

LOL! His surname is "Padayachie" which sounds like a reason to see a gynecologist :p

Seriously though - DVB-T is too little too late, South Africa has been a DVB-S country for the past 15 years and that will not change anytime soon. Especially not if you consider the super low prices at which MultiChoice and TopTV are flogging their DVB-S STBs (with dish and installation)

Ummmm dude..

DVB-S and DVB-T are ever so slightly different...

We need to move our terrestrial broadcast system off the ancient analog system it currently uses, so we can free up the precious bandwidth being gobbled by the analog signals.

What we need to do is abandon the senseless one way latency insensitive terrestrial broadcasts all together. Rather move it to DVB-S, which a lot of South Africans are already using.
Instead of spending millions on repeater upgrades just subsidies the prices of Vivid decoders (like Multichoice does with DSTv) and then the problem is sorted.

Using terrestrial broadcasts for radio or TV - digital or analog - is an ancient system. Rather beam it down from a satellite or stream it over wireless internet.

I believe that DSTV sits on 2 million users (maybe) and they are mostly a certain demographic (i.e. has a WELL PAYING job). For the rest of us (well my R20 EasyView probably puts me in the NON DSTV / i.e DBV-S crowd) close to 40 million South Africans (and 3 to 5 million "visitors") DSTV equipment is just to expensive / or we are not allowed to put up a dish in our complex, shack, etc....

Yes, one might need a new arial to go with your funky new DVB-T/2 "decoder" but for the MASSES DVB-T/2 is the way to go.... my 2c.

We have already spoken about the advantages of DVB-T2 over DVB-S here:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/298849-DVB-T2-chosen-as-South-Africa-s-digital-TV-broadcasting-standard

DVB-S is much cheaper and sensible than DVB-T, just take a look how many shacks has got dishes and you will see it is not limited to your geographic, demographic or income bracket.

Many people also forget about the SABCs Vivid service which is a DVB-S platform that has been running for 10 years now. Why not leverage the investment they made on that long time ago instead of spending millions on rolling DVB-T. We could really use terrestrial broadcasts and spectrum for much better things than TV.

DVB-T2 would be the way to go to replace the old...... then again

Yes, that is what DTT is all about - the digital divident - Broadband in 700 to 900 Mhz spectrum ;)

Lets agree to disagree ;)

Perhaps the minister surprise us all and say SA is going DVB-S (DSTV, TopTV) for ALL :)

Many still won't be able to put up dishes in their complexes :(

I think very few are affected by you no dishes in complexes problem. Besides, they all allow it as long as it is out of sight and most of them have communal dishes. You should perhaps go and see what a 40 element Yagi aerial looks like - a lot more ugly than a dish, I assembled and installed one so I know.

If they just leave terrestrial broadcasts all together they would save millions in infrastructure roll out and we can large parts of the VHF and UHF spectrum for something better than TV.
