Post all the home theatre bargains you can find here.
(While Dolby and Postmanpot are arguing about the name of the thread :D)

Maybe leave the sound to someone that understand a little more?

Anyhow zenbaas ... before you look at the *chuckle* Sony, take a look at the Yamaha 367 which, if memory serves, is R4,000.00. Even the 467 is about R6,000.00 and add a decent 5.1 system and even though you would have spent slightly more, you'll have much better sound ... and one that can do sound over HDMI, HDMI 1.4, 3D Ready, larger power supply and just better.

If your budget is tight and you can't get another R2k or R3k - then there is nothing wrong with the Sony. But if you can extend the budget by a few thousand, the difference is worth it IMO
Yeah the Yamaha 367 was the one that I was looking at for now.

I may be willing to stretch myself a little bit if it will be worth it :)

That Yamaha set is similar to PC speakers, where you have satellites (treble/highs) and a sub (bass/lows) without decent mids, so your mid range is non-existent - a no-no for sound quality.

I very much doubt the sound quality will be better than the Sony STR-500 @ R3999 - R4999 - http://www.sony.co.za/product/ht-str500 - its two bigger floor-standing speakers have tweeters, mids, and low range.

Um.

Don't judge by the sizes of the speakers. I guarantee you my floorstanders with 2 x 7' drivers will produce a deeper bass than your Sony with a subwoofer ...

Anyway - check this site as well ... www.soundandimage.co.za

Some really decent prices

PS If in a year you to wish your speakers to another set, do it. You've still got a decent 3D, 4 x HDMI 1.4 etc etc amplifier

Dude, where did I judge by the size of the speakers?

I cannot post one thing without you misinterpreting what I say.

I could not care less about your speakers - where was I comparing them, or saying they suck at bass?!

Unreal.

All in one systems don't do it for me. I'd rather have an awesome set of floorstanding fronts, running in stereo, than a k@k 5.1 all in one special.

IMO half the fun is in building your own 5.1 system.

For music and other stereo stuff... I agree.

But you won't be getting surround sound from your HD PVR/HD rips/etc.

Agreed. At a price, though.

The way that came across is that set is similar to PC speakers, where you have satellites (treble/highs) and a sub (bass/lows) without decent mids, so your mid range is non-existent - a no-no for sound quality.

What did you mean if you didn't mean that? :/

That much is given, just emphasising my disdain for these packages that you find at Game and Makro. :D

I'd honestly rather watch a movie on a good stereo system than a crap 5.1 one.
Agreed. At a price, though.
Sure, but you buy as you can afford it. There's no pressure in having to get everything at once.

Emphasis on the lack of mid speakers, not the size comparison in mentioning PC speakers.

*shrugs*

Well the bargain is the 3D Yamaha amplifier at R4,000 IMO!

Definitely. I'd even say that the speakers may not be half bad, however it's the receiver that lets everything down. HDMI repeating is a must for me.

I would have liked HDMI repeating, but it was out of my price range. I don't mind having audio over optical/SPDIF. I realise this isn't HD, but still - more than good enough for me, and most people. ;)

So Postman - you don't see the value in a R3,999 Yamaha amplifer?

Wow - its like we are living to two different worlds :/

But at least we agree that it offers awesome value and should be looked at!
