Surround Sound/Home Theatre Bargains

mini review by someone who just bought a few posts back, have look
not sure on the model no tho

Onkyo HT-S5405. Don't waste your time with the entry level Sony/Samsung offers. They don't compare. You want something you can upgrade when the time comes that gives top audio quality.

Picked up the Onkyo HT-S5305 for R4k the weekend - i know the "older" model.
Must say its just awesome.
Just what i wanted, might get some bigger fronts, but right now they just perfect.
Those small little speaker surprised the hell out of me!

From where if I may ask ?
Out of budget (again). Upgraded my tv to a Full HD LED 100Hz. :)

Also being a neebie to all this I haven't heard of Onkyo before can someone enlighten me please

Yes. bought two sets, one for a friend. Speak to Vaughn at Smart L.

Vaughn has a good name/reputation. Never dealt with him but browsing different forums, it seems he provided top service.

We still awaiting the 5305 for R4000 deal...

Budget is budget hey. Also, you did not test the STR500's properly IIRC (remember I gave you the settings [that made a massive difference] to try?). No fiddling with settings and no proper testing environment. Obviously the Jamo's are better, but they also seem a lot better to you because they are in your home - a smaller space with better acoustics.

Sure, if budget is R8,000+ then go for a better amp and entry level Jamo's. Though I still maintain that STR500 is a big enough upgrade for most people, and for most people audio over optical isn't a train smash (one extra already hidden cable). Plenty of people rave about them, no question they're the best for a R4,500 budget.

Fair enough, I didn't test them with your settings, but overall it didn't really wow me. Plus the fact that it appeared to be end of life made me want to wait. Thats when I decided to go for the amp and speakers separately.

Nothing wrong with the STR500, but for R3000 +- more you can get a better, newer system.
