On the 20th of January I purchased a Cell C 3G speedstick modem. I did my research, and according to their website, I was meant to receive the Huawei E1752 (see http://www.cellc.co.za/internet/page/data_prepaid/modem-compatibility, as well as the image on http://www.cellc.co.za/internet/dat...omotion-supersonic-surfing-for-only-5c-per-mb). This is the modem I expected to receive, and I bought a 3G router (for internet connection sharing) that is compatible with this modem.

I went to the Cell C branch in Canal Walk and bought the modem. When I got home and unpacked it, I noticed that I had in fact not received the Huawei modem at all, but rather a ZTE MF190. The MF190 is not compatible with the router I bought and thus of no use to me. Also, according to the Cell C website, this modem is not on the list of supported modems, and it even says
All other current ZTE Modems are not compatible with Cell C's new UMTS 900 network.
(see http://www.cellc.co.za/internet/page/data_prepaid/modem-compatibility)

I took the the modem back to the store as soon as I could and requested an exchange. This was within two days of purchasing the modem and I had barely used any data. The sales person told me that he never had any stock of the new modem he took mine back and placed an order for the Huawei I was supposed to get in the first place. He took down my number and said that he'd call me if the modem came in fewer than 7 days, but if I never heard from him, just to come back in a week and the modem would be there. Since I received no call during this time, I went back a week later and asked for my modem. I was greeted by a different sales person, who did not know the status of the order and simply said that they had no stock of the Huawei and that he didn't know when they'd be getting any. He was being quite rude and essentially implying that this was my problem, not Cell C's. I went back a third time last week Tuesday and was told that the order had only been placed the previous day (Monday, 31 January - 9 days after I took it back)! They again promised to call when it arrived. I went back a 4th time on Tuesday, 8 February, only to be told, again, that they did not know what was going on! They gave me a phone number to call, which they said was their head office in Johannesburg, however after dialing the number several times, I believe the number is some sort of fax number which cannot receive voice calls!!!!! I went to the Cell C store in Cavendish to inquire as to whether they had stock of the Huawei, which they did, but according to the sales person, I could only deal with the store where I actually bought the modem from to begin with!

Not knowing what to do next, I wrote messages on HelloPeter.com and also to Tell Trevor. I received an SMS (full of spelling errors and completely unprofessional in my opinion) from Tell Trevor as follows:
"Hi,we hav reCeived yr query & shall attend to it a.s.a.p ref no:*********-an sms will be sent to u when yr query has been Completed.Regards Cell C"
On HelloPeter, I got a generic response:
"Hello ********,

We are in receipt of your query.

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns with us.

We acknowledge that the above mentioned incident may have proved to be annoying. Kindly note that we will be in contact with you shortly to assist further.

Regards,
Cell C Team
"
I never received this contact that they promised.

Today I will have been waiting for my replacement modem for a total of 20 days!!!!! I've forfeited almost a month's worth of internet that I've been paying for and who knows when this will be resolved!?!?! I can't even exchange the modem, as, although I took the modem back after 2 days (within the 7-day return window), I never requested an refund.

It seems to me that Cell C doesn't care about their customers at all, as long as they get their money! I don't know what to do anymore and am completely shocked, disgusted and astonished at what I see as Cell C's lack of delivery, poor service and unprofessionalism. I am posting all of this as a warning to others to think twice, and be very careful when dealing with Cell C, because it seems to me that they don't care about their customers!

I too got the ZTE MF190 while expecting the Huawei.

Of course CellC screwed up a bit and you had a bad experience, but I do think this is a case of not-so-competent salespeople being the problem rather than CellC's attitude as a company.

Take a look at this thread. LPR, CEO of CellC is really helpful and I'm sure he will sort this out for you.

Just an afterthought: Is there any real technical difference between the Huawei 1752 and the ZTE MF190?

Your issues

I can't wait for the Consumer Protection Act to kick in on the 1st of April this year. Practices like this will be deemed illegal and you will be able to go back a demand a full refund and uphold your rights. They will not be able to advertise one product and then give you another one.

The ZTE might not be technically inferior but it is not the modem I expected to get and it is not compatible with my router, so with the ZTE my router is nothing but a really expensive brick.

I can't wait for this either! I wonder if I'll be able to apply for a refund for this once this act kicks in?

The ZTE MF190 does work on the UMTS network mode. The device, however, can only attain data speeds of up to 7.2Mpbs... I think the router they had was the Huawei D105 which is not compatible with the ZTE modems - unfortunate. Did they say if they had a router compatible with ZTE modems for sale?

Perhaps theres a software upgrade for the D105 that will enable compatibility?

It seems that I was wrong in thinking that Cell C wasn't interested in their customers.

I contacted Lars Reichelt (CEO), and was contacted myadsl's Cell_C and a very efficient lady from the online support team and I actually received the correct modem by 17:30 today! Thanks.

It seems that I was wrong in thinking that Cell C wasn't interested in their customers - in fact it seems that nothing is further from the truth! They have, in the space of a few hours, shown me the best customer service I have ever seen, and I truly commend them on the great service they have shown me.

Thank you Cell C! :D

Maybe because you're a professor!

The rest they don't give a hoot!

Good to hear! Did you find out anything about why they provide both the Huawei and ZTE modems?

No, never actually inquired about that. The ZTE still isn't listed on the website. I don't know why they'd change from using the Huawei, especially since the ZTE has a different dashboard. If anyone has two modems on the promotional package (say for the 5GB and the 2GB), and they receive a ZTE for the 2GB option, they'd have to have two different dashboards installed.

I have the exact same issue i bought the contract expecting an Huawei E1820 and ended up with a MF668 which isnt compatible with my Netgear router. Where do I start, I got the device yesterday, problem is it was via Nashua Mobile. eish, this is me pretty unhappy...

@Hydsea002
Post a complaint on hellopeter and their Facebook page. You have a good reason for wanting the Huawei. We had the same problem. Bought the Netgear at work and during the time of procuring the Netgear, the Huawei's got discontinued. We managed to find a E1820 after calling around frantically.

Cell C just called me regarding my slow uploads. As a sidenote I asked why the Huawei's were discontinued. The reply was that Huawei stopped manufacturing the E1820 and E1752.

I would complain on Hellopeter.com, though that actually never worked for me - my problem only got resolved after this forum post. I'd contact Cell_C or LPR with this. I think you have a good case for wanting the Huawei and you're only asking for a product which they're actually advertising. Good luck!

But why swap to a new manufacturer? They had to write new dashboard software for the ZTEs.

It sounds to me like there were too many cases of Huawei modems over-heating. The decision to switch to ZTE probably also made financial sense. Writing new dashboard software is a small sacrifice compared to saving money and minimizing issues related to over-heating, I would guess. I'm just speculating though.

That makes sense. The overheating issues are quite surprising, considering Huawei is a reputable brand. My Huawei gets really hot too when its been on for a while, but it still works fine, so I think the high temperature is pretty normal.

My ZTE gets pretty hot too when put under stress, but it never stops working. When coverage is bad, the modem has to 'work harder', which results in higher temperatures. Or it least, this is how I understand it. So a certain modem might only overheat under a certain set of conditions, with coverage in a certain area also being a factor.

That's true, but USB current is limited to 500mA. At 5V, the most power the modem can draw is 0.500A*5V=2.500W. If the device were 0% efficient (which it certainly isn't, or it wouldn't work), it would dissipate all of these 2.5W as heat. I would have thought Huawei would have designed the modems such that they are capable of dissipating this much power without overheating. Otherwise its just poor design.
