Debian 6 Linux has finally been released

I honestly do not get the "it looks ugly" comments.

I do not spend much time looking at the interface anyway. Click menu, click menu item, app opens, use app ... or ... open terminal, type what I want to happen, it happens, go outside to play with my dogs.

My only requirement is that it works. The easier to make it work the better.

But I guess that is why I write code and do not draw little pictures to make people happy.

PS. Yes I use ubuntu too. But I have not changed anything on the interface, still using it as it came out the box (or off the free CD they sent me).

I am also using the default theme that Ubuntu came with...but it is PRETTY!!!!

As Ubuntu and other Linux distro's becomes more popular, they have to cater for people who likes a bit of bling on their OS man! Not all of us are colour blind coders that only sees code in black and white :-)

Add this to make it pretty. Well you can go look for your own version of pretty ...

uFiS, ocleroux doesn't do girls, so that first wallpaper might offend him. :) But I do and it looks ACE!

I'm also using Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit. Just like all the extras you get with Ubuntu, music store, cloud service, etc. Very nice.

*Just the thought that Debian stands for Debra + Ian is just a bit too nerdy for me.

Can't wait can't wait, used Lenny for 11 months its still running like the day I had installed it. This is the most stable OS out there. Debian forever!

not me, I spent hours adding compiz effects, dockbars, themes etc- now its just as I like it.

come on. crying about the desktop background being ugly. one of the easiest things to change no matter which OS you use.

I agree it's not at all about the X GUI's appearance that makes a good linux OS, but still I've been an ardent supporter of debian for years until about a month ago when I switched to ubuntu (which is based on debian) and so far I couldn't be any happier... ubuntu is the way to go =)

that's interesting. hardly hear of people going from debian to ubuntu. what led your switch if i may ask?

I wasn't happy with debian's release cycle - using old stable versions of software. I tried dist-upgrading to testing and unstable and it just wasn't good enough either, basically broke my machine. Since moving to ubuntu everything just works flawlessly plus my server boots up in a quarter of the time. there's just no need for me to stay with debian anymore

Innocent question : Are there people still using Debian?

I mean the answer is of course yes - a couple of diehards or people locked into some old application or two.

But I mean are there significant numbers of people still choosing it on its own merits?

It seems so, from this years linuxquestions survey:

The polls are closed and the results are in. We had a record number of votes cast for the tenth straight year. Congratulations should go to each and every nominee. We once again had some extremely close races. The official results:

Server Distribution of the Year - Debian (29.35%)
Desktop Distribution of the Year - Ubuntu (28.56%)
Security/Forensic/Rescue Distribution of the Year - BackTrack (36.87%)
Mobile Distribution of the Year - Android (76.82%)
.

i do. debian unstable though for what must be the last 4 or so years. Never had a broken system either. My install is as stable as any other distro I've used. and that's on my desktop computer, my htpc and 2 laptops (one of them being a macbook pro).
