I find the following report quite alarming, and certainly hope that the SA Renault/Dacia is better than this:

Europe's independent crash testing authority, Euro NCAP, has released the results of several new vehicles.....Also released this month is the small off-road 4x4 Dacia Duster which, with an overall rating of 3 stars, failed to impress Euro NCAP. Scoring only 28% in pedestrian protection and 29% for safety assist, the Duster performs well below the latest level of safety performance demonstrated by other new cars on the European market.

Euro NCAP expressed disappointment that a mother company like Renault does not give safety the same priority in Dacia cars as it does in cars sold under its own brand - albeit the Renault Sandero and Logan models sold in South Africa are rebadged Dacias.

The Sandero has dual airbags, ABS, EBS etc... so I'd imagine it to be safer than the European equivalent

Yeah, and the Citi also was sold with an airbag in it's last breaths! Airbags does not mean it will do any good in a prang. Not sure what the Dacia spec is overseas, but I'll rather stick to a "proper" Renault
SA people are misled by these "rebadged" Dacia's, and IMO a negative image for Renault SA.

Airbags dont help pedestrians. However I find that if you want to walk in the road you shouldnt rely on NCAP ratings for your chances of survival. Im more concerned with what happens when vehicle meets vehicle or vehicle meets hard object.

This sounds harsh, but I don't really give a sh*t for pedestrian safety. Get out the road, and look before you walk.

If you're doing anything over a certain speed, any car that hits a pedestrian will most likely kill them anyway.

I must admit to kind of liking the Duster as a no-frills affordable 4x4 :o

Well the only safety features of my new car is brakes and 200kg's of solid steel and aluminium. 1972 Land Rover series FTW.
Pedestrians? I will not even feel the bump....

drove one as a rental in cape town back in October for a week.....
Nothing fancy but well spec'd for the price.
The 1.6 liter was not afraid to be revved a bit, aircon worked great, handing was not awe inspiring.
But nice for the price....

In that case I'll be sure to drive my Astra and not my Corsa when I hit you. Astra G eats pedestrians ;) nom! nom!
