Help needed reviving older IDE drive that detects but won't let Windows boot

They were charging per 100GB? Ugh that's really not cool. Bastards.

I know what you mean about the instant panic when someone realises their stuff is gone. Some of them will pay almost anything to get it back, and unfortunately some of the DR places use it to their advantage, and their customer's demise.

Are you going to have a use for the USB-serial adapter now that you've fixed your drive? You could hang it on your rear-view mirror, would look kinda cool. Or not.

Yup... per 100GB... and R500 per 100GB too!

That little USB-serial adapter is already on its way to another needy soul.. who will return it when done, and then it is off again to rescue another persons drive.

It will be performing miracles for some time to come... and then it will have a nice safe place to rest in until next it is called upon.

Much goodness will be spread.

That's awesome news. We should start a FB page for it, people can become fans and 'like' it :) Glad it's being of use.

LOL

Maybe send it to MyBB HQ who could be its custodian and whoever is in need can then request it, use it, and return it for the next unfortunate soul.

:}

EDIT: IT has just been returned and is about to venture forth again !

thanks to PP for showing me this thread, so I thought it only fair to respond accordingly

first and foremost I'm not sure if there are other people on the forum who do recovery, but myself and south_bit are probably the most well-known, so I'm gonna assume these posts are referring to me.

when the 7200.11 issue came out, no one had a flippin clue what was going on. people were getting bricked drives left-right-and centre. I used the internet to find out what was going on and saw a business opportunity. the big corporate were charging thousands and I offered a cheaper, much cheaper alternative. Please tell me what is wrong with that?

For the record I don't charge R500/100GB. That is ridiculous

I'd also like to point out, that to each and every one of the clients that I have dealt with regarding the 7200.11 issue I have made implicitly clear thats there is nothing actually wrong with the drive, and that I'm merely charging for time. If the person can not understand that, them I'm sorry I cannot help them.

so flame away if you feel the need, but at the end of the day there was a gap in the market. Did I exploit it? Perhaps. Did I rape it beyond measure? Perhaps.

I dont think so though. The only thing Im guilty of is helping people paying 80% less than the big corporates.

I think you had a good thing going. As mentioned, the corporates were (and still are) charging ridiculous and exorbitant amounts for what was a quick fix. You did your homework and research by finding an answer to a widespread problem and saved lots of people a lot money, and made a bit yourself too. Win-win situation. I'm not against what you did, but I am against the big guns ripping people off.

There is often a time and a place for costly recovery. When it involves using expensive equipment, days of research and troubleshooting, and spare parts, then a quote of a few thousand bucks is perfectly fair, as I'm sure you all agree.

Do you still get people approaching you with the 7200.11 issue, or has the time pretty much been and gone?

thank you for seeing my side of the story. seems some people were getting a bit tense under the colar

I currently have 3 drives which I need to get up and running. People come to me coz I can do this with my eyes closed, or perhaps they not as confident as the next person. Bottom line is that most people would NEVER try this, and also NEVER spend like R6k... but you knock that right down

and like you said... win-win situation

People don't wan't to do it themselves as there are risks involved and they are not confident or technically savvy enough.
People don't want to spend the rip-off prices data recovery companies charge.
But they have a major issue when you offer to do it at a FRACTION of the cost a data recovery company will charge.

Hey HTC_Guy

Without getting into a flame war.... your quotes to me all mentioned handling fee, recovery fee and a GB recovered fee for a 7200.11 BSY error. Your PM's tell quite a different story to that you quoted below. I took issue with that and declined the service. I even grumbled about it at the time...

So... perhaps it has all changed. The issue for me was the charge for the work done although cheaper than the other channels was still exploitative.

True...

It was not people... it was I that did not see a need for a handling fee and a recovery fee. I know the big-guns charge this... but this was a unique situation that did not need the standard cost structure. Perhaps in my naivety I expected the 7200.11 BSY issue to have a fair, flat charge for the risks involved...

Would I have paid R600 for the service... hell yes. But R1500 off-the-bat for accepting the drive and "recovery" and then the mention of a further charge per 100GB just flicked my * meh * switch. It then became a pffft * meh * grrrrrrrr issue when JUST how much recovery went into this issue.

As I have said many times.... people who saw value in the service benefited fantastically. The alternatives were few and far between... I just did not see any correlation between the cost and the service and refused to allow the "value of my data to me" become the axe over my head.

I do not want it done for free. I pay what I feel is a fair price for services rendered... for this service I did not pay.

And that is all this is in a nutshell.

yeah I dont wanna get into a flame war either, but you starting to annoy me

that they (the cheapest) wanted to charge R500 handling fee, R1000 recovery fee and then a charge per 100MB recovered data. * grrrrrrrrrr *

NO RECOVERY, NO CHARGE
R1000/1TB drive is correct, only if successful.

Where you get this per 100MB I'm stuffed if I know. So get your facts right please. Ive probably got like 50 emails to clients I could post them all here outlining my pricing if you like?

Its odd that you the only person that is bitching. You fixed your drive, well done to you but dont go on and on coz you cheap :p

Nope, PMs.

And PMs can be posted if they have the consent of both parties.

Either way, relax...

LOL...

Cheap and value for money... too different issues.

I pay... I can also post many examples here of how I actually pay more than quoted / requested because I feel it is worth it or it is fair. Perhaps I have a different sense of VALUE to others. I dunno. I did not bitch. i commented. My moan was about the scarcity of the cables... I think I muttered twice about the cost. Even the cable I paid twice the quoted price... it seemed fair to do this.

I guess I will remain "cheap".

Well, as for bitching... you jumped into this thread. I never mentioned you. This is a minor post in a soon buried thread about a long forgotten issue. Well done.

* meh * I am not going to split hairs about this... I have my data back and a cable that can be used. You have your business to run and all your clients can email their hearts out.

You have my full permission to post gmail email and PM's here... provided you allow me to do the same.

I have no problems with this.

Are you retarded? :wtf: Anyone on this forum who is a resident knows that you were talking about me. For someone with 2100 posts you should know this....

PP pointed this thread out to me, and rightly so. Whether you agree on my "value for money" or not I dont really care. I provide a service and you are the 1% that has a problem with it. You are entitled to be cheap, I dont care.

However, I do take serious exception to you posting incorrect info about my costing. Simply because you cannot read English and understand a quote is not my problem. Im not here to educate you.

bottom line, I dont care if you cheap. I do care if you post k@k about my costing
