Opera Mobile Store launched in South Africa

How is this different from the plugin libraries that they have always had? Is it just a re-branding to make it sound trendy?

It's not a way to distribute plugins, it's a way to distribute applications. If you take a quick visit to the site you'd see things like Skype and Quickoffice.

The usefulness I see here is that Android devs can distribute their paid applications this way and we can actually buy them without having to jump through flaming hoops to get them. I don't know if BB and Symbian have the same problem in this country, but they might in some other country.

Does it have use? Sure. Does it have a lot of use for me? Nah, not really.

From a Nokia perspective it looks like it has basically the same apps that are already on Ovi. I don't have an Android yet, so can't comment on whats available here compared to the Android based stores.

If all the portals have basically the same apps, then the only differential is ease of use and cost.
Can anyone see a difference in cost?
I know Opera mini is still probably the most widely used browser on mobile phones (non IPhone/Android), so there will definitely be a lot of potential buyers out there.

Anything that further exposes a developers app to the public is good in my opinion - as long as they're good apps and not fart-machines.

everyone is starting their own app store nowdays- they need to consolidate their efforts

Yet another app store, built on the tried-and-tested method of following Apple's lead but substituting finesse and attention-to-detail for flexibility with a not-quite-polished look. I'm guessing they just want to get their hands into the cookie jar, but this comes after almost everyone is already tired of eating cookies.
And Apple at least has a captive market and extensive user-base with a proven record of paying for apps.

Opera mobile is cool to reduce data charges, but what is the point of an App Store?

So basically, if you have a phone running a non-Apple and non-Microsoft OS (which have their own app stores), this app store should be pretty handy. I've looked at some other app stores for Java apps and none of them were kept up-to-date. Hopefully with Opera behind it, this app store will be really nice.
