Erm yes please where can I sign to get mine. I wonder if any ASUS reseller would bring them in or do we have to do it ourselves as I truly want one.

Judging from recent pricing models with the Tegra , it will be atleast R5199excl vat, prepare to pay a premium :p. However very nice specs

I hope not they bring this in at below $400 mark so should be R4000 - R5000 incl. at most.

Anyone have any idea who the distributors are for Asus here? I would love an SA release date on this.

Pity that they only target the Android market with this, would have loved to put Arch Linux on it...

Erm reading your tag line I actually cant believe you just said that.... Android is build on a Linux kernel, you know you can root the device and go build your arc gcc then install pacman and off you go..... its just a matter of trail and error but I am 100% sure it can be done. You might have some issues with X11 support but I am sure there must be some projects on the net that is actively working on it.

Or give it about 6-7 months and the go download someone else work and install it :)

It is a little more complicated than that, if you follow the XDA forums you would know that there are a lot of driver issues (vendor kernel pathces) and Android no longer runs from a "pure" Linux kernel (the reason why so many FOSS advocates want to take Google to court - too long of an explanation for this discussion) so it will be a little more than just an "away you go".

Google is making it more difficult to hack Android with each release and manufactures try and close the already small gap of "open source" even further by restricting access to various parts of critical hardware like the BIOS or anything to do with the bootloader.

Granted, I have no yet looked at an Android kernel, but that is useless in itself without the vendor patches (drivers for hardware, etc), and I'm 100% sure that Acer will not just hand those over, you will need to try and reverse engineer their kernel to see what those patches are, again the reason there are so few custom Android ROMS for all the phones out there.

All in all, it is not as "open" as I would have liked it to be.

Granted I haven't stuffed around with source code for the last 5 years

From what I understand is that Android is still Open Source and can be downloaded here. What I also got from media is that Honeycomb or more Android ver 3.0 has not been open sourced yet as there are still some issues to work out. This might cause an delay into trying to get Linux on the new Honeycomb devices. I think this might also be part of the reason why they holding up the code. Running say Debian on a phone is not as promising as running it on a tablet device.

Drivers can be an issue as you mentioned esp if the manufacturer's do not release there code, that's why I mentioned the X11 issue. But I still think it will happen esp seeing that Nvidia support Linux on the tegra chip

Also a quick look around I found some article in this matter:
http://soltesza.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/tegra-2-supports-ubuntu-linux/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GJsy7FEPak

Again, I haven't stuffed around with Linux hacking for some time but I am sure it can be done, its just going to take some time.

I'm not flaming you or disagreeing on any particular point, and I do agree that anything is possible, if they can hack the Xbox360 and put Linux on it then this is also certainly much more do-able.
It's just not going to be easy.

Ok just mailed off a request to Asus South Africa to find out if they will be importing them for SA market, if it fails I have my pre-order ready at Amazon.uk to ship to my friends address.

it looks nice and all, but i just don't like that software that they put on top of honeycomb. i want the pure untouched android experience as google intended it. i feel like my desire is a brand new better phone since i installed a custom, base rom without the htc bloatware.

I spoke to Asus they will be importing them to S.A couple shops already have them for Pre-order but I don't think all the info is in I haven't seen the bundle version with the keyboard and they seem to be listing a GPS and non GPS version which as far as I know doesn't exist or at least doesn't exist anywhere else in the world. Also both versions are listed as having GPS in the specs so there must be a mess up somewhere. Pricing is looking to be between R4000 and R5000 without the keyboard though and the keyboard looks like it will set you back another R1600. Hopefully the bundled version will be more reasonable.

Thanx for the update atlas. I would gladly pay R1600 for the keyboard as that is the main reason I want it instead of the Xoom or Samsung.
My current Eee PC it will replace cost me R7000 so its more or less in line.

Looking at the sales in the UK & Europe this tablet is gonna be a tough one to get your hands on.

I hope we get some soon into SA

Well if this comes out and I still don't have my Galaxy 10.1v then I will definately consider going this route.
