Has anyone here ever gone for the eye surgery? How old were you? Did it completely correct your vision? Is covered by medical aid in South Africa and if not, how much will it cost? Thanks in advance for all the information.

What kind of correction are you looking to do with the surgery? there are tons of options you can try depending on your scenario.
M/A generally does not cover it.

No

+/- R12k an eye.

This was 12 years ago: I started wearing glasses @ age 9 and haven't wore glasses again.

As tau1z said: there are a lot of different options: but my dad, my brother and myself all went to the same doc, and have never looked back: excuse the pun.

med aid does not cover, unless you got come contacts in the med aid that can swing things your way or your doc provides some really compelling reasons why u need this surgery.
The last time I checked, it was around R10k+ an eye.
It is def worth it, but if you under 40, try and convince the doc to over correct as with time it will deteriorate and will get closer to perfect vision (this is presuming your are near sighted - myopic??)

the deterioration was due to the laser thickness and how they corrected the vision. In time, the cells in the eye would regenerate and therefore deteriorate the vision.
This has been greatly reduced with the more expensive lasers out there.

Over correction is never a good idea, again, there are so many factors here that it would be best to consult an opthamologist. If its a straight forward thing, then go I would say go for it.

Yes but it depends on your medical aid though

Do a search here for LASIK as the topic has been extensively covered many times before.

when I did it, I asked the guy to over correct and he refused, and then within a year my eye sight had stablised and went back to almost what it was before the surgery. I went to see the doc then and he tells me that the new thing is to over correct for people in the 20s, man was I pissed :) ... still one of the best investments I have ever made. And definitely need to consult an opthamologist .... just make sure that you get someone that has good references or u know people that used him. I know a guy that went to one just because he was muslim and he kept getting infections after the surgery

Wife did it 7yrs back and cost her then R15K for the entire op and she has never worn prescription lenses since then. No, its not discovered by her medical aid, Discovery. She says its the best thing ever.

I on the other hand cannot have the op done as I will see no improvement. Not everybody can have the op done. But the procedure is improving each year and it might be possible for me.

About 24
Yes
Didnt have any so would not know.

Now, more than 14 years without being called 4 eyes (Had glasses since age 3)

Had it done last year at the age of 54 best thing ever I had Multifocals before and could barely read without glasses on
strong sunlight would make my eyes shut without darkening lenses. After the procedure I can go out in the sun without any sunglasses eyes accept
the stong sunlight.
I still want to wear a prescription glasses but can still see okay without them old habits die hard I suppose.
Because of my eye condition they sacrificied some long sight in my left to allow me to read
so in effect without glasses each eye behaves differently. The cost was around R17,000 money well spent definitely recommend the procedure
and if you are young all the better.

I am near sighted, my vision is very bad and my Optometrist told me years ago that i can easily qualify to have Lasik Eye surgery. I'm told it's around R20K these days. I have to save up though as I am tired of wearing spectacles almost all the time. How much time does one need to recuperate after having the surgery? Just something I always wanted to ask, why don't rich (well known people) who were spectacles have Lasik eye surgery done? I look at someone like Bill Gates or Daniel Vettori (New Zealand cricketer) and I wonder why don't they have the surgery done? I know it's a personal choice, just asking and curious :).

Where do you guys recommend I have a lasik eye surgery done? Which Dr.?

My brother did it about 6 years ago and his vision is still near perfect. I wear glasses and he can actually see better than I can with my glasses on...lol

He paid about R16k and recuperation was one day in a dark room. His vision also had a sort of halo effect, especially with lights but that cleared up in a few weeks.

As soon as I have about R20k to spare I will definitely do it but damn...so many cool things to buy still haha ;)

The cool things are only cool for so long, perfect vision without contacts/glasses however is something you will appreciate every single day.

Bit of a horror story
But I worked with a retired Dentist for a while. He had to retire from dentistry because many years ago when corrective eye surgery was still new, his eyes were damaged during the operation. He described the doctor as a cowboy thou , who commented’ its always the doctor eyes that go wrong’…

Anyway the guy can barely see, still drives thou ,at day. He actually went for a cornea transplant. But apparently the results can take months if not years to show
He did say that I should not worry about todays procedures and that a lot of advancement had been made
Still terrible story thou

How long ago? Maybe he had radial keratotomy back in the day.

Yes,
32,
Yes,
No, used my medical savings
Total was about R11,000 for both eyes, back when I went

I went to the Pta Eye institute, they tested my eyes to see if I qualified for LASIK (I was myopic, or near-sighted). I could see fine within 3 days, although it took about 6 months for my vision to stabilize and thereafter my eyesight was better than most people's. It's a huge relief to be able to wear sunglasses and not be bogged down by regular spectacles, or worse, contacts

- Yes.
- 32.
- I had myopia and astigmatism; my vision is technically slightly better than 20/20, but text is blurry at a distance (for some reason each eye sees a double image, slightly offset).
- Generally no, though my in-house medical aid at the time covered a part of it (and I claimed some of the rest back from SARS).

There's no way to explain how much it will improve your life to someone who hasn't had it yet, but it's still the best thing I've ever done for myself. I did some research beforehand and watched the procedure on Google; it freaked me out, so if you're squeamish rather avoid that. :)
