WACsing the competition

The arrival of the Western African Cable System -- or WACs -- that landed in the west coast town of Yzerfontein on Tuesday will accelerate competition in the local market.
 
When Eassy landed not much happened so we'll see what WACS does.
 
It's the Telkom IPC costs that is holding everything back now.
 
Competition will be more effective after the removal of LLU.
 
I don't forsee any change in the current broadband pricing before 2012... unfortunately.
 
"Experts" also said that Seacom will not have any major impact in the near furture and see what it brought us. Hopefully WAC has a similar impact.
 
Seeing as it opens up a HUGE cake of speed for Telkom, I rate we will see them releasing uncapped accounts at affordable prices. We might even see them put a huge amount of pressure on Mweb if they decide to offer true unshaped uncapped for the same price (they probably could, considering how big that cable is). That would be great for everyone.
 
First Telkom should first remove the hidden ADSL tax (line rental). Secondly they must reduce IPC costs. Thirdly they need to start LLU. Then we will see a true reduction of ADSL prices in this country. Until then they are not going to put any pressure on any body.
 
If nothing else, at least this will provide some decent redundancy for Seacom. At best we could see uncapped 4mbps at R250pm.
 
seacom made an impact about 6 months after it arrived .... uncapped adsl , lower cell c data bundles etc. the balls in telkom's court now they have no excuses , bt in mean time we'll at least get better quality connections
 
i think the landing of this cable won't necessarily drop the prices. But i do believe it has great potential to make better speeds & stability a reality.
 
I predict that WACS will unleash a wave of marketing-speak and corporate hogwash as our non-competitive telecoms companies vie for top spot in designing the most creative excuse as to why they can't reduce the cost of data.
 
Before everyone runs away mumbling about Eassy, has it even finished testing yet and started offering commercial services yet?

the mtn,voda & telkom cartel owns this cable,why would they cut prices,this three has many tricks to maintain the status quo
 
Competition will sort itself out, unlike EASSy which is access-controlled by the monopolies this is an open cable with plenty of bandwidth. They'd have to be competitive in order to sell their capacity, so it'll be major competition to Seacom. It may take a while for marlet forces to kick in but I for one cannot wait.

this is exactly the kind of comment i was going to make.
the big telcos spin doctors will have their reasons/arguments ready as to why the cable wont really give us what its intended to do- lower the prices & increase the speeds.
prepare to be amused, angered & frustrated even more than before.

if only Broadband Infraco was licenced to offer services directly to the consumers, i think they will force them to react quickly- until then, you know how it goes with these guys.
we will see lower prices & faster speeds eventually but dont know how long that will take.
i also seriously hope that some of the other members are correct- that Telkom will start offering uncapped @ decent prices.
