BlackBerry PlayBook South African launch details emerge

Expect the cash price to start from R4700 for the 16GB
 
I still think this would be the most awesome device ever if it ran on BIS. Pity though it only has Wifi. It seems as if the software upgrades address most of the issues raised in the reviews. Good to see they're willing to change to suit customers needs.
 
This Wi-Fi only PlayBook makes sense if you have a BlackBerry device, because you will have the BlackBerry Bridge, until the 3G version comes out, I can't see a reason to buy this one over the Android and Apple tablets with 3G.

Also the other issue with RIM is there Blackberry App World.
In terms of Apps they farrrrr behind Apple and Andriod.

And for that reason, the Playbook will be running Android Apps using an Android Player for Summer (US - June / July timeframe) and they demo'd this in action yesterday at Blackberry World Conference...

I'm picking mine up on Saturday when I arrive in the states :)
 
Despite it's industry-leading hardware specs, initial reviews of this device are not very encouraging. And to be expected, cos this is a first offering from RIM in a category they have little/no experience in.
Personally, I'd rather go for the HTC or one of the Samsung Galaxy Tab models (second gen Tab is due to be released very shortly).
 
I agree with the apps being junk in APP World - actually have seen over 2000 apps etc and i have roughly around 20 apps installed from weather, fsquare, protect, bolt browser, twitter, dictionary,bloomberg,xe,accu weather, etc.

Also have the Playbook already -- paid a good price so I am not complaining at all and BlackBerry smartsphones will be a popular selling point in South Africa. Even though the service provider might add a large mark-up
 
I reckon working on the road would be ideal with the Playbook. The company I work for has standardised on BES for access to the corportate network and without it the only way for me to access e-mail and calendar is by booting up into Windows, hooking up my 3G and connecting via VPN client.. (What a DRAG!)

If my understanding is correct, the Playbook is simply larger real estate to manage what has already been pushed to your BB device. Perfect!

Just gotta wait for it to arrive in the country.
 
prefer ipad2 if aiming for a tablet however for productivity maybe a netbook is better, just put it into hibernate and get one that has 3G built in then slip in whatever sim you want
 
Playbook rave review//

Well, I'm blown away, been playing with mine for a day..

Blackberry phones don't have a 'native' email client, and I don't expect their tablet to have one. No biggie. You can use a web browser for your email. Painless.

Oh ok, but you want an APP for email? For some specific reason I guess, because thats the only way it can interface with your PIM?
That's why you need to go Blackberry, its integration between contacts different methods of contact is PHENOMENAL. Use one and see. Tweet a contact, FB a contact, linkedin a contact, email a contact, BBM a contact, text a contact, and call a contact if you really need to, from one phonebook entry. Done, sealed, working.

The playbook is for Blackberry users, thats all. IF you use a Mac, have an ipod, like jailbreaking and using itunes to manage your life, then get an iphone and ipad.. With everything there are restrictions and things that are 'by design'. In Blackberry's case I think the reason is security. When your playbook is unpaired from your phone, guess what? Your email, PIM, and bbm is locked out, inaccessible, gone. Im happy with that.

What else?

Multitasking - phenomenal.
The Need for Speed game runs flawlessly, 1080p video, email, camera, and web browser all perfect.
Oh and it can run all those AT THE SAME TIME. Not 'paused', RUNNING.. that includes capturing full HD video simultaneously.

Next thing you're all gonna moan about is 'lack of apps' . The device launched with more apps available than any other tablet had at their launch. Got it? Good.

The device is new. BRAND NEW, give it some time to mature. But the platform it is built on is rock solid (QNX OS)
There are no limitations to it.

So they've built a rock solid foundation.. guess what's going to happen? It's gonna flourish.
More apps WILL come as developers switch on to the capabilities of the device. Same as when iPad launched, there was a 'lack of apps' (want me to dig up the threads??).

Would be nice if they said how many messages there were and not just a "red *"... But that is nit picking. On the latest ZATECH podcast (158) Simon Dingle also said he really likes the playbook.

Will have to see what it looks like at the end of the year. Must say the ability to run Android (2.1 - 2.3 or 3.0?) Apps via a player sounds really interesting...

It makes Marketing sense if u dont want ur nu product to eat away at ur previous produkt's market share and if u wanna introduce a nu produk while simultaneously increase the sales of ur old produk<<<<<its Genius
 
It's also lightning fast, true multitasking. Apps RUN in the background and don't just 'freeze'. It's a monster of a tablet.

You don't need 3G, well unless you're a multimillionaire and have money to burn on 3G data costs, you just won't use the net heavily over a 3G connection. You will ALWAYS use your wifi connection as much as possible regardless.

Try it, use it. It's an enterprise device though, bare that in mind. Most people today want games and apps, time wasters. Blackberry don't do this.
I wanna get my online life done efficiently and quickly to be able to get offline and back on my skateboard as fast as possible.
 
Just confirming that with the latest release of Blackberry Bridge and the latest Playbook software update, browsing using BIS on your Playbook now works well.

I've just watched a 1.10min Youtube video that stopped to buffer 3 times. Before the aformentioned updated Bridged Browsing was almost a non-feature.

Tell me how Telkom's 8ta "Project Hulk" fits in with the Playbook :) thats 10gig of 3g data @ R199 per month.

3g browsing virtually unlimited ? i think we may well need the 3g model after all..

I think the iPad and iPhone users will more appreciate a subscription like this.
 
I have been using my Playbook for just over a month now and I am loving it. I have the 32GB wifi version and I am very impressed!
