SAA the only airline that can test using cellphones on flights

Cellphones only allowed on SAA

South African Airways is currently the only airline that can test the feasibility of using cellphones on its flights, the SA Civil Aviation Authority (Sacaa) said on Friday.
 
The guy next to you on the phone... "Hi mom i'm currently on an Airbus 737 at 39 thousand feet!"

I agree, can think of nothing worse than some idiot yapping on his phone next to me on a flight. It's bad enough having to deal with idiots who play their ipods so loud you can hear their headphones from 10 rows away.

Will be interesting to see how may new air rage incidents we're going to see.
 
Don't worry, they only testing. If it fails at least Osama won't be blamed.
 
This is not about using a cell-phone on board to make calls but to use it in flight-mode for music, etc.

WiFi-based data services will launch soon via G-Connect on Mango and this is probably the main reason for this testing.
 
These airlines are stupid. People with iPads and kindles can play away while 'cellphones' are forced off.
 
Uhm this is not about people talking on their phones. It's about using everything else on the phone.

You know, that may be true. But you surely can leave your phone for 2 hours.

I for one, am against this. I dont want to next to some chop rattling on while im just looking for a peaceful flight.

Exactly, and both of them have models with 3G and many users probably don't even know how to switch it off.

I agree there are enough self important chops as it is. But I need to
be able to listen to some tunes on the iPhone as we soar into the night sky Otherwise I need to buy an iPod on top of the phone.

Your average air steward wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an ipod and an iphone.

TBH I find screaming kids way more irritating than somebody talking on a cellphone.
 
Hope SAA don't allow on Airlink. They have a hard enough time keeping those planes in the air as it is, on second thoughts perhaps they more reliable than the on-board voice recorders

but on an early hours business flight (jhb to ct) you could get 1&1/2 hours work done with a laptop and 3g card?
