Be warned!

Some South African broadband providers send online copyright infringement warnings to their subscribers, while others don’t. Here are the details.

Iburst said:
iBurst’s Executive Head of Human Resources and Legal, Pearlene Singh, said that they have not sent out any copyright infringement notices

Thats because you cant do squat with iburst anyway! :p :p

Great response by Web Africa. It's a pity that other providers don't share the same view.

Although IS seems to be the common factor among most of the ISPs who do issue warnings.

What exactly are you talking about?

ISP's is very competitive - Telkom (Line Rental/ADSL connection) NOT - that is the problem.

Cybersmart has sent me a few of those mails. First time I nearly sh....t myself and deleted it. Must say that I have not received it in a while. Maybe it is reflection on the crap that I sometimes download.

Lawmakers should worry about the crime rate, as committing a murder is a lot more serious than downloading a movie about one,” said Wright

Wright needs to catch a wake-up:

i stayed in digs last year, 4 complete nerds sharing a 4meg line (uncapped) we didnt even get a single notice and we were really excessive users, really excessive..

Torrents is a no go anywhere around the world. Stick to news servers and you will never receive notices as such. My friends who live in America don't even use torrents anymore cause its unsafe....... Interesting article...

Just use direct links. I have not heard of any copyright notices being served to people who use direct links or newsgroups etc. Torrents are the big no-no. At UCT, staff members have been disciplined for torrents.

Edit: I in no way support piracy.

I remember an article here a few months back saying that those emails hold no water under South African law. They usually go blah blah blah Californian law blah blah blah American nonsense. American state or federal law has no standing here. I think those emails are mostly just a scare tactic.

There will always be a loophole, a backdoor to get the content and a security solution to cover your ass.

Ultimately, American law has standing everywhere. And don't anyone dare forget it.

Worst that can happen is that the peering agreements overseas ISP's hold with our ISP's will be terminated. Or put on hold.

If it bothers you getting the warnings just go Google IP blocking or Blacklist and get many hits on how to's like http://filesharefreak.com/2007/12/04/ip-blocking-blocklists/
With software like Peergaurdian all they are doing is sending torrents underground. As for the "wiretap" that is still illegal in South Africa, people tend not to use protocol encryption, but this can be done as well.

Wonder when will the media industry realize its not the way to fight piracy.

if you download content using torrents would peer block(http://www.peerblock.com/) keep you safe? hypothetically that is?

Yes and no. I can't speak for others, but my experience is I used to get many warnings over a year ago. Finally I was mailed and told my account would be suspended, but it never happened.
I was quite annoyed, but also anxious over it, so downloaded peerblock. I stopped receiving many warnings... they basically disappeared. Then out of the blue, about two months ago I received another while running peerblock. Obviously something slipped through. Anyway, after I didn't respond, I expected my account to be closed, but again, thankfully, it didn't happen. This is strange as I know of others from the same ISP who on this forum have claimed of being suspended.
The point is, Peerblock DOES work... at least for me it made a huge difference in the number of warnings.
