8ta: full network services operation on the horizon

8ta does not seem to be doing as expected. I remember when they launched they were so ambitious. Its part of telkom after all.
 
Odd name, odd campaign and we will only know in another 6 months if they're really doing what they promise. Until then, no probs with vodacom.
 
odd packages not helping. I saw they have a very competitively priced blackberry deal. Good to see competition in the market. As much as I hate telkom, more mobile players can only be a good thing!
 
Drukkie sums up my belief and one day when pigs fly and i have FTTH (fiber to the home) i wont pay them anything Bloody agents

Well I am sure for all the daughters that 8ta will do well, as internetwork cost is their main business model which will allow them to stay ahead. Watch the space
 
what is the status of Femtocell deployment in South Africa, many major international operators are far ahead as it has been shown that more than 50% voice calls are generated within home buildings and this can improve the networks rates
 
I will definitely support this operator for one good reason, its South African brand and their name emanates from the recent internet lingo, we should be proud of this. At the other hand we need a replica of this on manufacturing side, we need one cellphone manufacturer from South Africa, this will be the first cellphone manufacturer in the whole continent
 
I've been very impressed with 8ta thus far. I expected them to be fail as badly as telkom has and although the haven't exactly always been perfect, they do seem to have competitive pricing and interesting deals.
 
Using them atm.

One thing which I can say (in their favour) is that there is no "restricted" or "unrestricted" APN nonsense.
 
guess we cant expect big data bundles from them, since Telkom mos believes that people don't need more than 3Gb per month?

One problem they have, or at least what I experienced, is supply of handsets.... they had (have) some good deals on cell phones, especially considering the the 'calls to landline numbers', but not all the Telkom shops can supply anything other than the basic basic prepaid handsets.... I wanted their HTC Wildfire deal for my daughter, my boet, looking at the BB deal... but Telkom Kolonade only keep the cheapie handsets, if want the better stuff, have to go aalll the way to Menlyn :-(
too much trouble for my liking.... gave it a miss
 
Can you buy airtime any where other than at tills on 8ta? Wanted to get a SIM for my iPad but I want to be able to buy airtime online.

And mandatory voice line rental. If LLU is implemented (or at least Naked ADSL) by November 2011 as initially promised, we won't have to deal with Telkom at all.

+1 Competition can only be good. Look what Cell C's new HSPA+ network is doing to mobile data pricing. With 8.ta there is fresh new blood at the helm, with fresh new thinking. This can be seen from their marketing, product offerings, pricing. Let's hope this sort of mentality can filter through to Telkom land-lines division, who are in desperate need to change their way of thinking.

Competition is the only thing that will FORCE Telkom into innovating, reducing prices, and bringing out great products. I'd love to see 8.ta flourish and put severe pressure on Vodacom & MTN, just like Cell C is currently doing.

8.ta vs Ayoba vs Telkom?? MTN is also a local South African brand, with mostly South African shareholders. They've done squat to compete with Vodacom over the last 20-odd years. Telkom have an even worse track record, and they are also 100% South African. The only company that actually was really successful and brought lots to the table for consumers was Vodacom (though not anymore), and they were 50% British-owned (now 75%??). Cell C - also mostly foreign-owned (Saudi Oger). It seems that we cannot do Telecoms right without some foreign ownership and input.
