Microsoft purchases Skype for US$8.5 billion

Hope they don't change anything major.

Works quite well at the moment.
 
But what does it meeeeean? Maybe windows desktops will now come standard with Skype built in.
 
Well done to the folks to kick started Skype and turned it into what it is today. Must be an amazing day when someone buys your business for over $8 billion.

I think the biggest thing to come from this deal will be very tight integration of Skype/Skype Services into the Windows Phone 7 and future platforms. This will undoubtably give the platform a much needed nudge in the competition with iOS and Android.

Taking into account their (MS) recently announced partnership with Nokia, the Windows Phone 7 platform will also benefit from Nokia's (rather good) navigation solution. Now throw possible skype integration into the mix and you have the foundation of a rather good Mango update or possible Windows Phone 8 platform.

I don't see MS changing the business model for Skype too radically though. There is mega bucks to be made in Skype Out calls, though the system does in part compete with the Live Messenger solution. Perhaps Live Messenger and Skype will also be merged into a single product offering?
 
I'm not usually bothered by company buy-overs/out/whatever. I have the same worry this time round as the time when MS went into heavy discussions with Adobe; will Linux support/development for Skype continue? I'm sure there's gonna be a lot of money and effort going into Skype in the coming months -- I hope to see at least some of it on my Linux machine.

Last time I check they dont build much, just buy it. From IE to Word all the way to the OS, all bought.
 
Anyone who thinks that MS will remove free calls is very mistaken. The reason skype can count up that amount of talk time is BECAUSE skype to skype calls are free, and they always will be.

MS will only add value to the entire package.
