Excuse me? I signed up for MWEB on the 28th or 29th (I forget) of May to finally give it a shot. YouTube buffers every 3-5 seconds, making it impossible to watch "instantly." And no, not only YouTube, any and every online video service. Single-threaded downloads only manage maybe 50-80kB/s. Hell, anyone just has to go take a look at the subscriber feedback thread to see how unhappy people are on MWEB's backbone.

So, frankly, when you say, "better performance" my mind boggles at how bad it must've been before!

I am disappointed with the level of support, the quality of the service and, for a company MyBB lavishes with such praise in its articles, I expected more (much more).

I'm proudly a 4Mb OpenWeb Gold subscriber on the Altech backbone, where videos stream instantly, Steam downloads at full speed, browsing is a breeze and what you expect to have work, works.

Oh, and you have to just love cancelling with MWEB. Nothing like being charged for two months' use because you have to give exactly one calendar's month notice (regardless of the fact that my cancellation was handed in on the third of June). Goodbye R1,112.77. At least I found someone who could make good use of it, because goodness knows I'm not touching it ever again.

This is local peering, nothing to do with any of the services you're talking about.. which would actually have been better before you signed up and the peering, seeing as MWeb's uncapped network has gone downhill lately. Still my Youtube hardly ever buffers except maybe on some 720p videos.

What this means is for example gaming on WAGE is very good for MWeb because they peer directly, and accessing anything else on other SA networks that they peer with. But that doesn't make up much of what most people use on the internet.

You're fortunate then. However, my experience is quite the contrast to yours. Also, it's a shame but I don't use my internet access for (mostly) local content so my expectations are... shall we say... more demanding?

MWEB doesn't meet my needs, MWEB was a significant disappointment and waste of money, MWEB will never see business from me again.
 
I don't have to buffer youtube videos on my 1Mbps line. Very happy with it.

I never used to have that problem with my 10Mbps line but over the past 8 monthsmy line has progressivley degraded. Telkom have said there is nothing they will do until my line cannot synch above 1Mbps. There policy is "Don't fix it till broke"

You're aware that there are addons for Firefox/Chrome that save you the effort of downloading crap like that to your PC?

Regardless, I appreciate the thought but... erm... no.

One way or the other, why should I download something I can stream? That's not what I pay R1000+- a month for. Nor is every other video something I actually feel the need to watch to completion, so why would I download it?

Anyway, my curiosity with MWEB's offering is satisfied, there are vastly better alternatives out there.
 
Any back on topic. I hope Mweb can sort out their peering issue with Telkom soon. It's really affecting our client base. Try creating an rdp session from Mweb to Telkom it's horrible

Well done MWEB, you have opened up the SA market to cheaper bandwidth and hosting.
 
Is SAIX still relevant?

I notice that most ISP's don't use SAIX anymore.

Most ISP's seem to use IS, or Seacom directly.

Telkom's "new idea" (a few years ago) was that it could charge for "interconnect".
This is contrary to international norms - see discussions on net neutrality.
The effect on these "interconnect" fees is to prevent lower prices.
Telkom is not a content provider, and should not be charging for content.
They get their revenue from the consumer or the hosting server.

It required a big ISP (MWEB) to force this issue.
It is cheaper to route the traffic via international than local SAIX!

Just wish the dinosaur would invested the revenue they get from the consumer in improving the last mile infrastructure, see

how about a story about mwebs severely degraded international performance for 1+ months now
