Cell C CEO takes on Advertising Standards Authority

Judging by the threads on here about Cell C's customer service, they need to spend more time servicing customers and less time worrying about their brand image.

Just get over it already!
 
I agree with Lars.
ASA need regulation and there must be room to appeal through a real judicial system.

We should also allow competitive advertising like in most developed countries. Like the Coke / Pepsi ads.
 
Lars raises some interesting points especially in terms of the fact that there is no legal recourse to ASA rulings. I do agree that the ASA are nit picky and IMO have too much power, it's bizarre that 1 or 2 people can complain about an ad and this leads to a fine or some other ruling against the company concerned when the rest of the general population seem unfazed. They should work on reviewing ads only once a certain number of complaints have been received and also get beyond this corporate 1-on-1 BS as well, it's all so childish.
 
ASA is just applying the rules they have been given to work with.

I blame the Cellular Providers for bending the rules in their Advertising and starting a petty war in this regard.

Just call a spade a spade and advertise your products using real world performance and pricing.

1) What average speed does the product really run at?
2) How much data is included with the package?
3) How much does it cost per month and over the life of the contract?
4) What network coverage do you have and how much does roaming cost the end user?

Quit using stupid jargon and meaningless measureless comparisons.
Just give us the facts.

If cell c had stuck to the facts and not implemented their 4Gs story and started poking vodacom with a stick, they wouldn't have all these rulings against them...

You poke a bigger dog with a stick and then complain when the dog bites you...

Well the one thing I do agree on is that ASA is not in the best position. On the one side we have nitpicking, but on the other side is that the ASA lacks teeth to actually punish repeat offenders.

The ASA has a long standing principle which holds that where an advertiser provides an unequivocal undertaking to withdraw or amend its advertising in a manner that addresses the concerns raised, the undertaking is accepted without considering the merits of the matter.

This means anybody can say whatever they want and if they have trouble just withdraw the ad. Punishment must be handed out, even if the ad is withdrawn IMHO.

What this leads to is that the ASA is just a general mudslinging contest with no real advantage for consumers.
 
4Gs is very misleading. I don't fully agree with Lars. Cell C has been misleading with some of it's claims.

My (not-so-technical) friend recently argued with me saying he has a 4G capable dongle from Cell-C. :rolleyes:

This is not about the 4G. Yes they were wrong there no arguing. But Vodacom keeps on trying to hinder Cell C before they go to far with their new tech compared to Vodacom's old tech. So, they try every nitty gritty to stop them and ASA doesn't actualy have the knowlage and skill to rule fairly so Vodacom get what they want which is wrong.

Can you explain what you mean with "their new tech compared to Vodacom's old tech" ?

Lars for president !!!!!!! Do you want this country to get back on the right path ? then we need someone like Lars to run this country - he will sort out the crap once and for all. How can we expect someone with a Std 2 education or woodworking skills (or lack thereof) to run a country ?

Lars has done wonders to the broadband industry in SA. If it were not for him, we would still be paying R 3000.00 per GB

That was classic !!!!! You hit the nail on the head.

Cell C caught Vodascum sleeping, and it took Vodacom 8 months :confused::confused: to wake up and try to match Cell C's deals.
