Local loop unbundling has come ‘too late’

Noooo, you morons. We still want them to do it. When you talk like this you give the impression that we don't care about it and Telkom will jump on that and say "see nobody really wanted it anyway". Do not underestimate the ingenuity of some companies to make a profit off of it, in any format whatsoever. BUT THE LOCAL LOOP MUST BE UNBUNDLED!!!! :mad:

Edit: of course the ISPs are going to waver over it, as they will once again be forced to lower prices, and they don't want to do that, it's easier just to make more money off the consumer. It's the consumers that want it to be unbundled, why don't you ask them how they feel about it???

ICASA should have studied what has happened in other countries where LLU was an issue, selected a model that has worked and decreed "IMPLEMENT THIS".
 
I didn't think that Telkom would ever want to give it up. Cash in Telkom's pockets.

If I was an ISP I'd have no interest whatsoever in the local loop. Let Telkom deal with it -- it's their loss. I don't see any money to be made on it at all. If Moholi isn't lying about the R133 being unprofitable, why would any other company want in on that? They'd have to double up on Telkom's level of productivity just to break even. If Telkom subsidises residential phone service, whose going to compete with that?

The real savings and productivity increases are to be made at other end of the scale -- in corporate fibre and the backbone. That's where I want to see competition.

Not all exchanges areas would be "unprofitable". ISPs would cherry pick the profitable ones and totally ignore the rest (95%)!!

Good point. This would shift a greater burden on to the majority of people still serviced by (and servicing!) Telkom.
 
Option 5: Split the Local Loop division out of Telkom and run it as a separate company from which all competitors can lease services on an equal footing. This company would be required to maintain and grow the last mile and it will be their responsibility to price services appropriately to allow them to be a profitable and sustainable business. This company would then also have to diversify its revenue streams (maybe into long-distance back-haul fibre, or FTTX, etc).
