Hi Guys i am looking for a media player that can connect to the PC via wifi and stream any movies and and stuff from it.
I saw the WD ones but need to buy the wifi adapter so thats crap would just like to purchase one device that will do it all.

Regards

A couple of good specials like Mede8er MED500X with 2TB drive and Wifi Dongle included on special at Mede8ershop for R2789

9/10 times the media players will have WiFi optional only

ah cool thx

quite pricey though hey....

might as well buy a PS3 and stream from there

I had the Mede8er MED500X using Wifi Dongle to connect to my wireless network, but I found that the connection was rubbish - kept freezing on HD streams, having to reboot the device to get it going again. The connection distance was literally "the other side of a wall", so I can't understand why it was so poor.
After much fiddling with settings, with no luck, I eventually drilled a 12mm hole in the wall between the PC room and the lounge, then ran a 2m LAN cable to connect the two devices - much better, and no further problems.

IMHO wireless and media steaming, particularly full-HD content, just don't go together...

Agreed, you will be disappointed with wireless streaming.

Disagreed. I stream 1080p content over a 802.11n network without a hitch. Normal Makro-bought Cisco ADSL modem/WIFI, and a D-Link some-or-other 802.11n USB dongle.

Exception, then, not the rule. Count yourself "lucky"

Load some other traffic on the network while streaming...

Of course YMMV.

I don't know of any other traffic that a media player would generate while it was streaming.

Asus has what you need can also be controlled via iphone. Forget the model. But a quick google will bring you the results. Plus I saw it online somewhere for R1500. Not bad not bad

I use an LG BX580 Blu-Ray player to stream wirelessly from my NAS.

Edit: I got mine via a relative in the UK and it was inexpensive, but I have also seen them on sale here in SA.

Does anyone have any success stories to tell about a WD live and a USB WiFi dongle?

When I do a google search, it seems that most users experience problems getting even with the compatible wireless dongles to work seemlessly.

I use the Mede8er in conjunction with a TP-Link W8960N wireless router and the standard Mede8er wireless dongle. The Mede8er and the router are in the same room and roughly 3 metres apart. The router resides in a wood cupboard.

I seldom have issues with 720p content but 1080p is a no go.

Quite disappointing really.

I was looking for the same solution when I wanted a WD live in my room... Seemed like too much of a hit or miss operation so I just connected the WD live to the main tv in the lounge via ethernet cable and stream wirelessly to my ps3 which I moved from the lounge to my room and although I haven't streamed HD content to the ps3 yet (it's an old 54cm tv lol), normal streaming via ps3media server has no problems whatsoever

Got a WD Live here long with a WIFI dongle that's on it's list of certified compatible devices and it wouldn't work, sure it could access the internet but trying to access media on any of the networked PCs was a complete failure. Even tried custom firmware and dongles that weren't on the list of compatible devices.

Also the Western Digital forums were no help at all, full off either fanboys saying it worked perfectly or people having the same or similar problems with it.

I wouldn't touch the WD Live if you want to share media over WIFI and it doesn't support all popular formats. It's okay as a basic player (since things like it's WIFI are a failure) but it's price isn't that of a basic player.

Hmmm I haven't had any issues with any playback with various different popular formats (even unpopular formats such as FLV played flawlessly). For a simple network media player via ethernet cable, it's the best bang for buck media player around.

One gripe I do have is that some earlier tv series has a black border around the screen, and unlike being able to eliminate that with the full screen function of my ps3, you get stuck with the black border

I got a Seagate Go Flex media player someone brought me from the US. I bought the wifi dongle too. It worked well until and streamed Youtube videos nicely on my not so 4mb Mweb uncapped account. it croaked a few weeks ago and had it returned. Am investigating a PS3 as media player, seems to be nice software available for this, and there is the games side too, from dad to dad.

A nice bit of equipment I just bought myself is 2 x Ethernet over powerline adapters. No more wireless streaming for me. They are a bit pricey but I get perfect wired speeds so now I can also stream MKV's to my room where wireless couldn't handle it, no long wiring necessary :D.

It is definitely recommended for those struggling with wireless streaming

I have the WD Live with an "el cheapo" USB WiFi Dongle(Intellinet) I bought from Esqiure for about R80.

I stream from my PC to my sons room without any problems (so far).
