Cell C population coverage is at over 60% says Lars Reichelt

Looking at the coverage map the one thing I now realise is that South Africa is a very urban country.

That be so,more coverage using the 900 band means less towers to get good coverage...while eg vodacom 2100 would need 3, that's 3 towers with supply as to cellc with just one tower with supply. Resulting in high demand on one tower and less speed...

So its the question of coverage vs rate of supply

Iv put that together from the decline in speed on the cell c network while vodacom is pushing speeds

not lies, official statistics:
Urban-Rural; 59.5% urban, 40.5% rural
This was from the 1991 census, so it is quite likely that this number has increased. I have heard the figure is around 70% at the moment.

Gaping hole here.

We got an e-mail from Lars to clarify what was said at the IIR Broadband Conference. According to Reichelt, he explained that HSPA+ 900 still works at -115 dBm as the signals propagate further on UMTS900 than on UMTS2100. He said that he didn't speak directly to how the measure coverage.

All will be revealed at Cell C's next press conference, we're told.

The article has been updated to reflect this.

"According to Reichelt, this allows HSPA+ 900 to still work at the relatively low signal strength of -115 dBm"
This is an outright lie. The signal is practically useless at -95 dBm and weaker, it crawls to a virtual standstill, you can type faster than that.

Such a pity my complex here in the center of Johannesburg North is yet to be covered... Maybe concentrate on fully covering the main centres in the country first?

... vodacom is pushing speeds

Are you sure about that, I only get dial-up speeds in the middle of Joburg ? Maybe they have fooled you ?

If you offered me 10GB of Vodacom 3G at R50 per month I wouldn't take it.

i get great speeds from vodacom better than any network

:)I had very bad impressions about Cell C before they bowled me over with data promo. Now I am sold to Cell C "only cell operator to have HSPA coverage where I live and work.I never missed any KB from my 5GB.I had even burned 4Gig on 31st between 9-11pm(to finish unutilised data)Thanks CellC
