Samsung LED D5500 46" - White patches

I bought a 46" D5500 samsung LED TV. When the backround is dark or black, I can see two white smudges or blobs leaking through from the backlight in the top two corners and also two very slight white patches near the middle of the screen.

Is this normal for an LED TV or should I take it back?
 
Yes this is pretty common with LED-LCDs, especially the white patches in the middle. The back-light bleed is common across CCFL-LCDs and LED-LCDs. Depending on the severity, you might be able to have it swapped.

Does seem to crop up with some units of this model, refered to as Flashlighting.

The D5500 has the same panel as the D6000 range, check out this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1321982. Some say it goes away after few days of use (& proper settings). If not take it back, could be manufacturing defect in the edge-lit LED lighting.

This is quite normal but some panels are worse than others. If you can see it with backlight on 6-8 in a dark room and 12-14 in a bright room I would definately return the TV and ask for a replacement. Chances are the replacement unit will be much better. I have a 46" 5 Series LCD and mine are hardly visable. I can't see the ones in the middle at all. The ones in the corners can only just be made out in a dark room with a black screen when the backlight is at 10 or higher.

I have seen another unit, same model as mine, with severe spots in the edges and the middle so some are definately worse than others.

It is definitely not acceptable for a R11 000 TV. I have asked the store for a replacement and they said no problem. Hopefully the new set will be better. I know that LCD's will have a certain amount of backlight leakage, but to have noticeable blobs is crazy. (Even my wife noticed it without me prompting and asked about it so it must be bad)

Yeah, if your wife noticed it, it's definitely unacceptable. :D
 
My Sinotec had shocking back-light bleeding!! LA46 none at all, just an even "glow" directly associated to the chosen settings...
 
It seems to be very common on LED edge-lit LCDs...

Was one of the reasons I was happy to buy a CCFL backlit screen. I think the required alignment of the LEDs cannot be reliably met during manufacturing... Some people even turn out the screws on the back of the panel by a half turn, to try to improve the alignment - often helps.

You're absolutely right. There is always the odd bad unit so I am sure the new set will be better :o

Yeah, maybe the OP can try loading a 1920x1080 black .jpg on a flashdisk and view it via the TVs media player. Then try loosening the edge screws by 1/4 to 1/2 turn to see if lighting changes.
 
Gonna resurrect this one...

I have the same TV. No idea how to explain this.....

All around the edges of the screen, its appears to have a 'shadow' .... I viewed a pure white image on the screen, and around the edges the image is a light yellow/brown... Any ideas?
