FNB launches smartphone banking app

Just what ive always wanted on my phone. Great app, has a few flaws but still works well.

fnb lead the way in business banking. just signed up with them and instant accounting is the biz!

How do I identify the legit application and not a phisher?

They claim they will never ask for your userid and password at the same time. For what it is worth.

Register with your username, accept via Internet Banking, then log in with just your password in future.

I am using the Android app and it's so smooth. Banking just got better, simpler, faster ... oops! That's supposed to be another banks pay off line :o :p

I installed it - great app, but I uninstalled it because I have some serious security concerns. I don't think FNB thought about everything - the fact that it is almost impossible to tell whether it really is the TRUSTED (TM) FNB application on the Android market. But my main concern is that I am not happy having banking on my primary OTP device. If somebody steal/compromise my phone they have a lot of info including account name and access to use OTP. Technically nothing prevents keyloggers on an Android device either.

I'm sure they thought it through properly before releasing an app for it. There are huge risks involved for any bank if they do not take measures to secure their channels. Then there are also the measures you need to take. Telling whether it is a trusted app on android might be a concern, but if you follow the links from the FNB website, you should be fine.

Even if you don't have the app installed, they STILL have access to your OTP device if your phone gets stole , and although they might have your login name, a password that can be cracked in 3 attempts is definitely not secure (back to the security measures you need to take). So although I'm not saying it's completely safe, I personally feel it's safer than cellphone banking, which is also accessed ONLY from your primary OTP device, has no OTP to log in, and although limited in features, only requires a simple 5 digit pin, which is much easier to crack than an arbitrary length, alphanumeric + special char passphrase

I see your points, and I still have to think about it a bit. The problem really is that if somebody steals your phone the "FNB" is very prominent. The problem might not actually just be banking app related - because on my Android all my mail is already linked to the phone, so there is a wealth of information out there, I don't really want to link my bank login to my phone at this stage as well. At the very least there are some social engineering security issues. Does anybody know whether your bank login account name is stored on the phone or is it only used to link the IEMI of the phone to the account?

I'm not sure whether it actually stores your login, and doubt anyone on the forums will be able to answer that.

I use a passcode lock on my phone, so there is another layer of security, and if my phone gets stolen, I can easily remote wipe it (or track it remotely and smash the thief's face in when I find him)

If I were a nerd developing cool Android apps in South Africa I would be on these forums :-) And reading the post about my cool app. Unless they have a "www.myexclusiveftthbroadband.co.za" website we are not allowed to know about. Granted they will probably not be allowed to respond.

Been hoping they would bring an app out installed it earlier today and phoned 1 of the helpdesks through it - call quality wasn't too bad - nice little extra bonus

There are also very strict NDA's in place if you do any work for a bank. So even if you do know, you're not allowed to say.
