Hello folks,
There are some of you who have and still have a problem with using your GTalk on your Blackberry Curve 8520. You most likely get the error "Service not enabled for this handheld" when trying to sign in right?
Well, until now, I also had that problem, and behold, I finally found a way to get past it without breaking my head... I have the lastest Blackberry OS installed and I also have BIS active.
Before I begin, there is something that I have to share that I feel everyone must know:
My carrier is Vodacom, and I thought it well to actually go and ask them if they could help me with this problem with Gtalk. Apon getting transferred to the "Blackberry Department", I was, I must say, greeted friendly by a operator who in fact listened carefully to what I had to say. I was however not pleased with what I heard as a answer to my problem!!! They said that Gtalk ONLY runs on 3G and that Gtalk was not working because my phone does not support 3G. (tsk tsk tsk, shame on you Vodacom for lying like that) I obviously didnt buy any of that mumbo jumbo, so I thought it well to take the info I had from the net (messing around with your service books) and go off in search for a Service book editor program...
Before I continue, you need to know that you must do the following at your own risk and that you have to have a backup of your phone incase you make a stuffup. I cant be held responsible for your stuffups
And now how I got it right:
I found a nice little tool, a mere 4MB big called Magic Berry. (Free download) It enables you to open .ipd files and play around with them. In this case, you can edit, split and merge any service book entry as you wish. 1st of all, I made a backup of my phone in the Blackberry desktop manager (make sure you know where the backup file is saved). The next step is very important: You would need to go find a service book for gtalk, either from a friends blackberry, or from a popular file on the net called : "Service_Books_by_ranxoren.ipd"
Now, you open Magic Berry, and open YOUR backup file you just made. Once loaded, select "manipulate", then "merge". On the right column, choose the second IPD file and add THE FILE THAT CONTAINS THE GTALK SERVICE BOOK ( for example the Service_Books_by_ranxoren.ipd file.
Check all the ticks on the left column, and on the right, only the 2 service books that belong to GTALK. (in the "Service_Books_by_ranxoren.ipd" file it is the 2 "BBFS1" entries)
Click "merge selected" and the program will save a new .IPD file in its directory. You now need to open Blackberry desktop manager, and restore that file to your phone. Make sure you only choose to restore "service books" when you do the restoration.
I didnt need to reboot my phone, but you might have to. Mine worked like a charm and I didnt have the error anymore
You can confirm if the service book was added, by looking in your blackberry's menu (options, advanced options, service book)
