TopTV HD, PVR and VOD: What are their plans?

Sure they are still new in SA, being here just over a year but really? not be launching either of these two services will be putting them so much further behind their compitition (eg multichoice).

then again, TopTV is a cheaper service for the people who can't/won't pay multichoice. So thinking of it from that POV aswell, people wont always be able to pay for the new services etc... esp HD, as that requires a HDTV.
 
I'd be happy with a SDpvr (like was promised when they launched, then again a few months later, then again...
 
How about a simple dual view option to keep the peace in my house Before i start do google how to copy the toptv smart card and install my own toptv dual view.
 
Forget all the niche stuff, get a few decent sports channels first. There's no reason why sporting content should be exclusive to one operator. Pay up if you have to, the return will be substantial.

They should have a seperate bouquet for sports...same for DSTV. Why should I pay for sport be*** peoples 10 Super Sport sh*t channels! ? tsk

Agreed, but we know why they won't do that. Because then everyone would know how much they're subsidising the sports channels.
 
Agreed!!!! Essentially paying R600 plus for just sport coz most of the other chanels on multichoice is **** is just nonsense!!!

True. I have not watched TV for ages now....but I got such a pain in my hol when one Friday night I switched to Mnet to see whats on. True as god...what do they have on??????????

10 sport channels and still they show GOLF on Mnet!???????????
 
I drove past a billboard this morning advertising Falling Skies on TopTV as an exclusive release. BIG UP to Top TV for this one. Falling Skies is up to Season 1 Episode 7 in the States. It's a bold move and it makes me seriously consider Top TV as my provider. Sci Fi released in a reasonable time? Sign me up. Maybe we can hope for Game of Thrones as their next intra-season release...

OK, so the new info I got from this article in the short to medium term:
1. TopTV will not be competing in the HD market
2. TopTV will not be putting up alternatives in the PVR arena
3. TopTV will not be providing VOD services

TopTV would have been better off by not making a press statement.

Easy tiger, MNet on satellite doesn't show sport, only old analogue MNet

If you append "in 2011" to each of those statements then they would be accurate, except in the VOD case where they were honest and said they aren't looking at it yet.

They haven't made a press statement yet - these were responses to specific questions.

This seems like a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of thing. If they stay quiet, their silence will be criticised. If they're up-front about their plans they get hauled over the coals for them. I would rather encourage SA companies to be this open by commending TopTV for their straight-forward answers than to recommend they follow the route of so many others who stick their head in the sand when the questions get tough.
