Hi there

I moved two weeks ago (1km as the crow flies) and all my internet connections have gone to schit...

My ADSL is now completely borked. I have a 4Mb line and a Netgear DG384GT router. I'm getting download speeds lower than the upload speed, with intermittent drop-outs.

Speedtest done this morning -

Last Result:
Download Speed: 230 kbps (28.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 423 kbps (52.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Router stats look acceptable (I think) -

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 18.0 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 29.3 db 13.0 db

My setup is as follows -

- Two plug Telkom jack
- Router plugged straight into Telkom jack
- Alarm plugged straight into Telkom jack
- ADSL filter plugged into alarm jack
- Telephone plugged into ADSL filter

Any suggestions as to what could cause the problems? Thanks!

i would presume you tried more then 1 isp.

and tried plugging in the adsl alone without a alarm or telephone plugged in.

if you did could just be a over congested exchange.

Sorry, forgot to mention I did try two different ISPs.

Did try without the telephone, not the alarm though - was in a hurry this morning and didn't have time to first contact the alarm response company. Will try this afternoon.

if you did could just be a over congested exchange.

Then I'm screwed in other words? Crap ADSL, crap 3G...I can just as well go in stay in the middle of the Karoo then. :(

I'd say that your Exchange that you're going through is saturated, or at least just its downstream bandwidth.

Run a ping test too. Usually when the Exchange's downstream bandwidth is saturated, then the ping tests would also result in poor test results (100ms+).

Thanks, will test later.

I get the saturated issue (probably the case), but dropping to 10% or less of line speed? I would have thought speeds would be pro rata downgraded via the DSLAM/exchange or is it a "first come first serve" basis?

Used http://www.pingtest.net/ from Cape Town to Jhb server. Ping 119ms - I assume that is bad?

I've removed all connections to the Telkom jack, only router plugged in, still no joy.

EDIT/ ping to Pretoria 188ms

yep that is pretty bad :(

try to do it after 5-6pm, if it works then , then it is over congested exchange in business hours.

Had Telkom reset the port, no difference. They downgraded to 3Mb, no difference. Last speed test shows 11KB down vs 51KB up.

Waiting for the tech department to contact me. I may throw the router through the window before that...

Hiya SiriS.
Sorry to be the bringer of bad news.
Been there, got the t-shirt too!

Exchange's backhaul is congested. Period.
You will find that solving the problem will be almost impossible.

I activated alarm monitoring a few days ago - can't remember exactly if it coincided with the drop in speed. Initially I was getting approx 300KB on downloads. The alarm jack is connected to a ADSL filter before going into the Telkom jack. I have of course now tested with only the router attached to the Telkom jack, which didn't work.

Is there some other way the alarm can interfere? I read somewhere about having to possibly use a special filter on the alarm box itself?

Vierlanden
Let me guess, you're in Table View on TV 9 DSLam?

Vierlanden, Durbanville. 3G is even worse. Spent the last 7 months building, now I'm back in the internet wilderness. :p My wife works at home, VPNs to corporate HQ - it's a ****up.

+1 on the back haul congestion. Been there.

Broadband will become a selling point for property if Telkom don't upgrade exchanges in CPT.

Have u tried changing your router. I had similar issues but mine were related to bridging that I set up incorrectly.

Hopefully ur still within ur 1yr guarantee period from Telkom - as long as u have a ref number they will replace ur router. My last router worked fine 1 minute n died the next - replacing it fixed da problem even tho Telkom techs said there was nuthin wrong.

I doubt is congestion and them downgrading u shows as much. If only u knew sum1 in the area to perhaps troubleshoot abit more.

Tried a new router, different jacks, cables, ISPs, filters etc. - fairly certain the problem is not on my side.

Was able to achieve speeds this morning of approx 200KBps.

What exactly is the ADSL backhaul? I've changed from one DSLAM to another in the same area (same exchange in other words?) and previously had no issues, ran at full speeds most of the time. Surely that indicates a problem with my home connection to the DSLAM or the DSLAM itself?

I am in Vierlanden as well. The **** started in August last year. I had a perfectly acceptable connection - ie you could watch You Tube videos without buffering and downloads in general were quite fast. Then all of a sudden I couldn't stay online for more that 2 - 5 minutes at a time. I got Telkom in and they said they had upgraded the line to a 10mbps line and that my connection had become unstable, so they would have to downgrade me from 4mbps to to 1mbps. I now don't lose my connection, but download speeds are poor to say the least. The tech said I should wait three months and then ask them to trasfer my line to the dslam box down the road. I did that and they said no lines were available and it would happen automatically in due course. Well I would be interested to know what year that might be.

A Telkom techie is coming out, probably Monday. I'll see what information I can extract out of him. I'm not above bribing... :)
