Nokia CEO warns Android phone makers about Google and Motorola

Fresh coming from Nokia who's got the position right next to MS in the WP bed with these exact same OEM's placed further away. Only difference is Google and Moto have agreed to hook up where Nokia is still trying to push the right buttons to get MS worked up.

Simply does not make sense for an OS incumbent to purchase a so called customer/client of theirs. Will surely make Samsung/HTC/SE/LG/Chinese Android handset manufacturers worry.

He has a point, Google could move android exclusively to Motorola and leave other handset manufacturers high and dry... but in all likelyhood it won't happen, all it will do is force current partners such as HTC and Samsung over to other operating systems, it would be a huge blow to Google if that happened.

Elop is fearmongering(is that even a word?) as far as I'm concerned.

The reason for the acquisition was thoroughly discussed in a previous article. It's all about the patent wars that Google is trying to avoid.

I dunno why the other handset makers didn't see this coming. IMHO they are going to get roasted by Google. The same way the Microsoft roasted their plays-for-sure groupies. They waited for them to produce MP3 players, realized that all the manufacturers were making more money than they were, and decided to build the Zune. (which they still screwed up)
Google are probably sick of the manufacturers that change the OS so that you have 20 different phones all running some version of android that is slightly different from the next, and they won't do over the air updates, and they put their own crapware on it. They are probably looking at how Apple do it, see that they control the hardware, they control the software, and the experience is better. Users are generally happier (please, I am not trying to start a flame war between who is better between android and iOS).
Also, Google only make money on ad revenue from the phones, they are not making much money anywhere else, so I guess they also want a slice of the 40 Million plus phones that are sold.
Doesn't mean that Google are gonna come in like a white knight? Probably not. They don't have much experience building hardware, hence buying Motorola. However, I'm sorry, but when did you last use a Motorola that wasn't a piece of junk? I don't think this is a great move.
So, I reckon this is just a knee-jerk reaction of "ooh, we need to try the apple thing"
But... I might be wrong :-)

Google only make money on ad revenue from the phones
Google make a LOT of money from Ad Revenue. And this is an ongoing revenue stream. The sale of a phone is a once off source of income. If Google were to shut other manufacturers out of Android, they would be losing way more money in lost Ad Revenue than they would get from selling phones. Remember, there are currently more Android phones out there, serving up Google ads, than there are iPhones.

You are wrong about Motorola. They make good hardware. There software needs improving which is where Google comes in.

But Google's plan to buy Motorola for $12.5 billion has generated some analyst concern about whether Motorola will get preferential treatment over rivals Samsung and HTC. Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop said these concerns may be justified.
Lets rephrase that:

But Microsoft's plan to "invest" in Nokia for $1 billion has generated some analyst concern about whether Nokia will get preferential treatment over rivals Samsung and HTC. Google Chief Executive Larry Page said these concerns may be justified.

Google's relationship with all the companies are different, I am sure. We now just know that they have a very close one with Motorola.

Anyway, Android remains Open Source, so Google can never take it away from the phone makers. I know that the business dynamics are more complicated, but I it is still a better deal than a short term agreement with Microsoft.

Droid/Milestone? Droid X? Atrix?

This has nothing to do with Fapple, despite them thinking the world revolves around them. "The Apple Thing" involves making products that are "good enough", not bad but not great, then selling them to hipsters at the same price as much higher-end electronics and taking advantage of people's ignorance and tendencies to believe anything they're told to feed them nonsense like that performance, price, specifications, functionality, customisability or flexibilty are not important and that some ill-defined concepts like User Experience™ or even blatant straight-out lies like It Just Works™ or It Never Gets Any Malware Of Any Sort Whatsoever™ completely makes up for all the shortcomings and automatically makes their products better and worth more.

I doubt very much that Google or Motorola want to try anything like that, they prefer to let the products do the talking.

whahahaha nokia are scared and they have every right to be. Choosing WM7 for long term sustainability? pfft.

"One of the more telling things about Google's acquisition announcement on Monday was the response from Motorola's competitors (and Google's partners). Immediately following the news, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC and LG all came out to praise Google's commitment to "defending Android,"

Uhmm... can i just say something. Android is licenced under GPLv2 and Apache2.0. Need I say more?
Looks like Microsoft taught Nokia the art of FUD.

Anything but Apple, and I'm happy :) iPhone construction is great, but iOS smells so it makes the iPhone useless to me. Android / Win7 phones all the way
