Ad hoc / OOB mobile data: Why are rates so high?

So basically the mobile operators price OOB data rates higher to protect their network. And MTN's explanation is that they are one of the cheapest in the world. What a load of BS !

That's Telkom logic: the vast majority of subscribers on a 3GB package don't exceed their 3GB, therefore we don't need uncapped.

So then it's true: Vodacom is at least as stupid as Telkom, possibly even more so.

They just want to milk everyone for every damn sent they have. I cannot use half the features of my Android phone when I'm not at home because of the ludicrously highly OOB prices. CURSE YOU ALL CELLPHONE NETWORKS!!!!
 
I reckon if they lower the OOB price, then more people will use data stuff - they'll make the same amount of money, if not more. Especially with more and more smart phones being out there... What do you guys think?
 
I know many people who dont even know what a data bundle is they buy lots of airtime every week to brows on there mobile not knowing you can buy bundles for cheaper price and im sure there alot of people maybe even more people that do that than the people who buy bundles

....and yet on another day, on a totally different topic, they will state that they have enough capacity/infrastructure for data usage.
 
How stupid do these networks think we are? This "cheapest in the world" BS isn't going to fly anymore. Eskom tried to pull that one as well. We do have access to Google, you know.

Agreed - I think the average Joe Soap doesn't have a clue about data pricing and bolt on data, and this is where the networks make an absolute killing. The average MYBB user is more aware of data costs and how it all works.

One of the big reasons why they will cut you off immediatly on prepaid once your data/$ is finished but "cant seem to get their system to do the same" on contract.
Contract = more money there to be milked
Prepaid = when the money is gone , its gone .

You can buy data bundles for prepaid as well by converting your airtime to a data bundle. You can do this on an ad-hoc basis or recurring.
