Had the run around from Telkom on this one!
Telkom #: 0800 456 786
Telkom Terminology: this is an outdoor transfer
Various transfer dates: 4 - 6 weeks, 10 - 12 working days and 21-30 working days
Status: waiting for installation date
Problem: My income comes from working online - you know, pay the rent, that kind of thing being critical.

The new location has been through conformance testing and is excellent for ADSL and now it's transfered to the planning "comittee". They apparently have to see if there's a port available for me. Explain this to me: Why the heck can't they just use my existing port for the new line? (don't they have cable's long enough or what - what is the problem? why such a long delay?)

And they don't have any numbers you can call to expedite the process or even call the technicans doing the work to expedite installation.

Anybody have success with transferring a line? Numbers to call to expedite it, etc?

Stop waisting your time with those brainless drones in the call centres.

I'd suggest you phone Telkom head office in Pretoria (012 680 6000 <- don't know if it's been changed in the last two years) and make a fuss...

Start annoying them and complaining like crazy. That's what I had to do after waiting almost 4 months for my line to get transferred.

After various shouting sessions with the Pretoria office my request finally got processed.

Oh yes, you can also search the forum for other thread on this topic, I can assure you there are plenty ;)

Thanks quik. :-) I'll give both your suggestions a go.

Guys I'm shopping around for an ADSL modem and then ordering the line - needless to say reading these posts, shows up in for an uphill battle.

What is the line transfer you're referring to?
Does your current telephone number change or anything?

The line transfer was when we moved, so our phone numbers had to be transferred to the new premisis. Nothing to do with ADSL really.

Your current phone number does not change. All that happens is they install the ADSL equipment and some filters at your premises which then allows for the ADSL to transmit and recieve data over your normal POTS copper line.

Quik, that telephone number is no longer available/changed. They have to allocate me a new port and it's going to take a month. This is unacceptable as I get my income from working online and I need to pay rent. Why couldn't they tell me this when I applied for the transfer. My lease is expiring on Feb 1.

Any other means to get hold of Telkom head office?

What alternative broadband access can I setup in my area. I stay in Hermanus, and Feb 28 is just totally unacceptable as I will have a loss of income for a month.
I'm checking out 3G, but the rates are more ridiculous than Telkom: R1500 for 3GB.

What else is there? Anyone know?

Hey at least you got a shot at it :D When I asked if I could transfer the line they said: "No. That's impossible. There is no such thing. Don't mention it again"

So *shrug*

At times even ICASA is faster than Telkom.

A complaint with ICASA did help me a bit when I was in a similar position

Best of luck!

PS: It took only 6 months to sort out the mess Telkom made of our accounts. If everybody having to struggle with their useless accounts department could bill them for the time Telkom is wasting, Telkom would be filing for bancruptcy soon!
