BlackBerry takes a beating online: 11 October 2011

It would help if they were more open as to the root cause
 
touch wood - here I am with a Motorola using wifi through a telkom line giving me no problems! A few years ago that would be the butt of a joke!!!
 
Allegedly, RIM's servers in Slough, UK are the cause of the trouble as they serve EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) but I've seen (and have verified) problems in Brazil and other parts of South America!

The silence from RIM is deafening! I've seen one or two conspiracy theories already and I'm starting to wonder if this is not sabotage...

Not if you are a Vodacom topup customer - they apparently decided it was unfair that only blackberry phones were down, so they blocked the rest of us. How thoughtful.

It is in the process of being corrected and most of you that have reported your numbers to VodacomData have been unlocked.
 
While it is unfortunate that BB users have to suffer with downtime and they have no idea what is causing it, I do think this is a clear indication that the blackberry ecosystem is flawed.

Way back in the 90's it probably was a good idea to place a server on the network that pushes emails to your devices. These days you can buy a cheap Series40 Nokia and it will provide you with more feature than a BlackBerry and it does not require any special servers. Pretty much every phone out there can handle email and do socket based communication protocols.

There really is no need for BlackBerry to still rely on special servers and dedicated connections just to make their phones work. They need to start building normal phones that just work and does not require any special services to do so.

Will be interesting to see how they handle this as opposed to how Sony handled the PSN downtime.

That was down for more than a month... I don't think that BB customers will be as forgiving.

Vodacom aint gonna let me swap my phone for a Galaxy SII :P

Well they would if
* You bought your own phone AND
* converted your BB package to something a little more expensive

But no they are not going to take back your old BB and give you a shiny new Galaxy ir iPhone
