Synology DiskStation DS211 review (MyBroadband)

You don’t want your data tied down to one device – you want to be able to access it from any device on your local network (and maybe even via the Internet) – and that’s where the Synology DiskStation DS211 comes in.
 
Gee it is small and probably costs a pretty penny. I will rather use freenas. I have eye'd the software a bit. Looks Awsome. We use Nexsan E60 at work can go 180 TB Raw and then the various raids .... Pretty Awsome
 
Mmm, let's see... something that can hold 2 drives, has 3 USB ports and is not upgradeable for over R2000, or a Proliant Microserver that holds 4-5 drives, or 4 plus a Blu-ray drive, is upgradable, has 6 USB ports and can run any software you want, for R1300. The only way someone would buy the first option is if they are uninformed (or if it had an Apple logo on it :D).

I came here to say exactly that. After the HP Microserver, this device looks pathetic!

Oh Yeah!

MicroServer is awesome! :D

Even a bottom of the range PC @R1700 is better than this. NAS is not supposed to be see/pretty. Stick the cable in, then stick it in a corner somewhere.

No throughput rating is given for this either- I'd hope it's GB LAN, I wonder if it can push past 100MB/sec?
 
Seems pricey given the limit to 2 disks and raid-0/1. I prefer the R3.5k d-link ones with raid-5 etc as otherwise i just do what i am now.. re-purposing an old machine.
 
We use the 2411+ and the 3611xs DiskStations, and they're an absolutely solid product. They're quick, especially when you use aggregated ethernet ports coupled with a RAID configuration. They're quieter than nearly all other NAS products I've seen in it's price range. Our network switches make more noise than the DiskStations.
 
You guys are missing the point of this NAS, realise the market its targeted at, its a SOHO NAS, allowing probably 7 - 12 watts of power consumption for an always on network device, comparing it to full rigs using freenas holding 10 gazillion terrabytes is hardly in even the same league .. its like saying .. why buy a polo, Id much rather have this BMW .. they are miles apart in many ways, and each has their own pro's and cons .. personally, Id like to see more of these mini / soho nas solutions, especially if they come pre-installed with a rootable linux version, on 256 mb of ram, you can get a db server, torrent server, and webserver all on the same mini nas, and the power consumption saving compared to a full rig, would mean you'd save yourself 100 bucks in electricity every month.

Gee, a NAS review without a mention of network performance or throughput....

Even if the BMW is half the price of the Polo? Seriously? I cannot think that anyone would consider this product it this price point.

Yes, I do think there is a place for these NAS devices, but it must be at a lot lower price.
