Department of Communications invites comment on ECA amendment

This is great news, but it must be said that no amount of legislation or codified authority is going to help unless the DoC, The Minister and ICASA themselves are resolved to actually take the bull by the horns and make the drastic changes that need to be made. So far there has been no evidence of any resolve whatsoever to actually regulate this industry properly.

So far DoC/ISASA have not done enough, CLEARLY to move this country in the right path.
 
Oh, nice news. Hopefully this will help the DoC cover more ground in a much shorter time.

as ever, some good some bad some downright ugly - but as Garyvdh points out it is analagous to fiddling while Rome burns

Hm, gives me great cause for concern w.r.t. the independence of the regulator, and the sweeping powers it appears to afford the minister.

This reminds me (disturbingly) of the same crap they tried to pull under the office of Siphiwe Nyanda, which makes sense since the new DoC minister is an ex Nyanda stalwart. I personally see little good coming from this and plenty bad, and seems more an attempt to solidify power within the office of the DoC and turn ICASA into a rubber stamping operation.

I'm not seeing any existing threads in the prescribed forum.

Please could Sam/Dominic create a thread to get some discussion going about the implications of amending the new minister's already far too extensive powers and that sneaky clause where it becomes illegal to give ICASA the mampara of the year award?
