Split Telkom, says former ECN CEO John Holdsworth

ROFL!!!! Good analogy but I hope he is wrong.... Doubt he is though.... :D

I've always said Telkom should not be split along different divisions... but in pie slices with all the layers in each one... Create competition in all the facets of its current operations from data, telephony, residential and corporate services etc....

In effect create four or five baby Telkoms....

And prevent them from colluding with legislation and ban re-acquisition of shares by any of its split versions....

Agreed. A split has been in order for a while.
Telkom Internet has such a great advantage over other ISP's, no matter what their (Telkom and TI's ) repsective spin doctors may say.

If not LLU now, then a split of the company in order to give all ISP's a level playing field with IPC costing etc.

if the loop is unbundled, how do you work out how much the government paid into the infrastructure and how much telkom paid since it was a private listed company? if you bought a farm, I am sure you would agree that its not cool that someone comes along and claims it (Mugabe style)

This.

People like to ride the "we paid for everything with tax" train, but the reality is that Telkom have used their own cash since then to replace and upgrade much of that old network. If they had not, we would still be on ISDN.

It is a bit unfair to go so far as to further cut up a company, simply because the other ISP's refuse to invest in their own networks. They say its impossible because of Telkom, yet they never say why that is. They dont seem to back up their arguments with solid facts that are not flawed. Stinks of politics. ISP's just want everything handed to them, and they are willing to wait for that to happen, instead of investing in it with their own cash.

This does not excuse the fact that telkom has been exploiting their position to rip off users. They were still protected from competition for years until recently (relatively speaking).

Agreed. Split it. In any free market economy, anywhere in the world, a telecoms company with Telkom's dominance would be split up by a competition board. It is impossible for competition while Telkom dominates the entire sector. Split Telkom to create a free and fair telecoms sector.

Your proctologist phoned... he found your head.

Holdsworth: “The regulator and the Department of Communications need to step in and they need to split Telkom. They need to say that we are going to create a network company and a separate retail company,” said Holdsworth.
Proof that this is possible is Telkom's creation of the 8ta business unit...

AFAIK and from how it has been explained to me, Telkom is already split into (1) Networks (2) Consumer business (3) Corporate business with the rest as support groups.

So if Networks and Support remains as the core Telkom the rest can be splintered off into separate entities... https://secure1.telkom.co.za/ir/management/executive-committee.html

Split Telkom: John Holdsworth

Former ECN CEO John Holdsworth said that there is a bigger chance of him falling pregnant than LLU happening this year

WWhat makes this Brit an authority on telkom? do this , do that to telkom ......blah blah bla......
worry about investing in your company and not try to run other companies...

We will never know, however we will also never know how much Telkom has benefited from its monopoly status at the cost to (a) it's competitors and (b) the rest of us.

The quicker Telkom is sliced up the better for SA.

What would his nationality have to do with anything? How is he wrong?
