Real World : Golf 5 GTI vs Golf 6 GTI

I know there's only 8kw difference on paper between the two - but what are the real world figures like between the two cars?

Yesterday stopped behind a Golf 6 GTI with exhaust who - although I couldn't catch him - he couldn't run away from me at all. I was under the impression that difference between the two was relatively large considering only 8kw

Anyone know?

EDIT : Meant to say I couldn't catch him ... we were even. Seems to me that a Golf 5 (BWA) and Golf 6 must be roughly the same ... or within milliseconds of each other

The BWA version on the golf 5 is also in the 155kw region. Sometimes a bit more, seen a few stock ones @ dyno days. The AXX(2005 model) is 147kw.

I don't think there's anything official from vw though.

I'm not sure on the weight ; thought I'd be lazy instead of trawling Google ;)

So then the later Golf 5 GTI should be pretty much the same as a Golf 6 GTI ... which makes sense. I just thought there was a .5 second difference between the two which is quite large on the road.

In real world terms driver skill comes to play as well.
Especially from a standing start.
Were both cars dsg?
Other factors like weight and aerodynamics also play a role.

I haven't seen much g6 gti's in action, but from what I hear they are some improvement over its predecessor in real world terms.
But there are other variables coming in to play here as well.

I've got a Volvo T5 with intercooler and software (185kw and 400nm) - but even with the power advantage, a GTI5 is not a walk in the park. I'm fairly heavy and my gear ratios aren't meant for boy racer blasts ... so it's generally 2nd gear I'm pulling ahead of the GTI5. I've never seen a GTI6 performance ... until yesterday.

I have no idea if or what other mods - but he definitively had an exhaust as I stopped behind him at the light. Light went green and he pulled off nicely and changed early to his 2nd ... and planted. I did the same from my 2nd and he didn't pull away - I sat with him the entire way. I've always just thought a GTI6 would do more - especially with an exhaust.

Following robot he didn't try at all.
 
Raced a new g6 with my G5 on Friday.He was ahead like a car on take off but then I reeled him quick and gave him 3 cars.Mine is 07 DSG.Not sure about his though.Not a huge diff imo.

yea they say the 6GTi is built alot better with improvements in the engine etc.. its not merely a revised 5GTi....
my wife drives a 5Gti DSG BWA and she wanted the 6Gti until she came home oneday and told me a race tale in the favour of the 5Gti.
 
I am told that the exhaust wont make that much of a difference on the g5/g6
its the downpipe that will give a increase in power
 
G6 engine has a lot more tuning potential than the 5. But stock for stock I don't think there is much in it.
