Vodafone Webbook review (MyBroadband)

Seems like its built to rip off the general public.

That's what I said when it was announced. I can't believe they give it an 8 for value. It's TERRIBLE value at that price and performance. Really, 500 bucks more will get you a brand new, proper Windows netbook with many times the performance and literally hundreds of times the storage. And "Home" and "End" buttons. If you shopped around I'm sure you could get a second hand one for R1500...

Memory specs are too low - bump it up to 1Gb for better performance, rather. Then it will perform well with the 800MHz processor.

Precisely - Take this for instance. For R1000 more you get an Intel Atom (Dual Core with 1MB L2 cache) @ 1.5Ghz, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 6-cell Battery, Win 7 Starter.

In our looping video test, where we looped 720p video

Say what? Can this netbook seriously play 720p video? My netbook (the one linked to above) can manage Youtube's 720p MP4's, but a decent 720p mkv is asking to much.

The Atom's video capabilities are crippled on purpose, but there are sometimes ways around it. Still, even if this thing can do it properly, how much 720p video can you fit into 1.5GB? LOL

You are right, a 800mhz processor can't. Its all about the graphics chip available, driver support for the chip, and the ability of the codec in question to take advantage of it. I am 90% sure the atom 1.5 can't either. From what I remember you need around 2 ghz for 720p and about 2.8 ghz for 1080p.

I was impressed with the pricepoint and specs of the webbook, but the browser review and lack of home and end buttons worries me. My previous eee with 800mhz processor worked very well with firefox, and it had a home and end key as far as I remember. Its screen res at 800x600 was just not enough.

bottomline, I want to play with one before I would futher consider it. And the other members made valid point that you can get a secondhand atom, based netbook that would be more value for money if you are not one that worries about 'hand me downs'.

Can somebody please point me to a netbook that is anywhere near this price as i want to get one for my maid for Christmas.

Its for the lower Lsm markets.
Good value, good concept, very cool device.
Could have been a little better though.
USB port for example and 3G, how much extra would that bump up the price?

Pros: Great Battery Life
Cons: Everything else

It's still better than that crappy 7" Windows CE/Android Mini Netbook which has been
making the rounds. They'll work for about a month before something (Usually Wifi or
Sound) fails. I wouldn't even pay the $50 cost price for one of those.

Ok. Someone working with my dad has got one of this. He forgot the startup logon pass. How do I reset it in UBUNTU? Never used UBUNTU before.
