Internet banking scam warning by police

cant help but wonder where they get the data that they use over the phone. surely it must be an inside job?

Very clever actually tbh....

Granted if my bank contacted me directly I would be asking THEM security questions, and not be answering any until they've verified certain details that I know only they would have access to.

They still need to have your online banking password. Unless you give that to them as well I can not see how this will work?

How does the "Forgot password" thing work on online banking? Do you get verified via SMS or email?

Edit: I have never forgotten mine and cannot remember the actual procedure when I changed it last year.

The forgot password thing works by sending you an OTP (one time password) to your registered phone, which the scammers obtained by first phoning you and grabbing your details, followed by contacting your phone network provider for sim swap. so all OTPs get sent to the scammers, which enables them the access of your online internet banking.

Depends on the bank though. Some only allow you to change passwords from within the branch.

Also depends on the bank..

Some banks have a pin and a password, so the scammers would somehow have to get one of them out of you first.....
 
why would they need to call the users first?

surely since they've got all your details from some database, they can easily just contact your cellphone provider for sim swap directly?

if they've got your cellphone number associated with your name, then surely its not difficult for them to get your ID, address, banking details, etc?
 
Not that I'd fall for a scam like this, but the OTP is shown to have its flaws, if you get dragged in with this scenario.

Capitec Internet Banking, Username, password and security token password.
Had to replace the token once as it got a drowning in the washing machine.

But still prefer it to sms baggering.
 
The joke will be on them.. So much trouble to find that most of the time there no real available funds in my account :o

Pity FNB does not supply their customers with Digitags anymore.
 
Or, change to Capitec.

Montly cost of ~R4 and most transactions are free. I end up spending about R20 per month in other fees (sms fees, eft fees, etc).

On top of that, you get free internet banking, and a random token generator. Good luck duplicating that ;)
 
ummm.. how exactly are they going to do a sim swap without your ID book?

I used to have one but when they stopped it I asked them why and they said its more secure without :wtf:

On the article though - how do they perform a sim swap without your knowledge. Also how do they get into your bank account without your password?
