My program that I use to change prices on our butchery scales, save backup files to a .csv file. I can open the file in microsoft excel, but I can only view the file in excel, because I didn't purchase it. I have openoffice on my pc, but when I open the file with it, it asks me what character set it must use.

How do I know what I must choose, because there's a lot to choose from. It will be much easier to edit the excel/openoffice calc file, that with the program itself.

What version of OpenOffice are you using? Have you tried the latest LibreOffice - seems to have better support for importing different file formats...

How messed up is it in OpenOffice? It might not be the character set, it might be the rules around quoting values. Microsoft historically used a mixed and broken set of rules for quoting etc. You can get problems especially where there are line breaks inside values (such as you get when pressing Alt-Enter in an Excel cell).

Why not post a couple of lines of the .csv and illustrate how they appear imported into Excel vs OpenOffice?

Ok, I can open the .csv file just fine with LibreOffice v3 (Same thing as OpenOffice). Is your Open Office the latest version? Also consider trying LibreOffice, http://www.libreoffice.org/
I've also got Gnumeric installed on my computer (which is my default spreadsheet app) and it opens the file without even asking me to do anything, http://projects.gnome.org/gnumeric/downloads.shtml

Here is a screenshot of the settings I choose for Libre Office when it prompted me:

I blurred out anything that I though might be considered sensitive in nature.

Thanks all for the help. Unfortunately me and my dad broke up our partnership, to be specific, I broke it up after he swear at me. We were partners. So I dont know whats going to happen, will know next week. So for now I dont have access to the files at work. But if I gain access to it again, I will let you guys know if it works on my side.
