Google tightens security in online Android app store

Google Inc has been quietly policing its online store for months now in an acknowledgement of malware’s growing threat to its increasingly popular Android mobile software.

Good to hear that there is active policing in their store :)

Lets face it most if not all of the threats in regard to security never came from the Market. OEM's are mostly to blame for security problems (Looking at you HTC), and then there is the whole side loading problem with people sourcing applications from none trusted sources.

Anyway, I have a feeling this is gonna come back and bite them in a bad way. False positives + if one does slip through can be worse marketing than people finding and reporting malware when found.

Gotta disagree with you there elementals. there are a bunch of malware apps on the market. Sure the HTC stuff made Android more insecure, but I don't think there were any malware softwares made which exploited that. I am very happy about this decision by Google and I'm sure so are all Android users, Google showing they care about security. A few false positives may occur, in that case I still think it's worth it - the decision can always easily be reversed later.

As far as I recall not one of the applications found to date where actual malware. Sure they did things other than specified upfront, but none of them did things other than the permissions they asked for.

Look I am not saying scanning is a bad thing, as I run Lookout myself but what I am saying is now that they are doing it, they start to take full responsibility. In the US this opens them up to lawsuit's if something does slip through. So they better do a dam good job at it.

you'll never get that from OVI or shall i say nokia store
